My vet is saying my dogs need it twice a year. I keep my dogs on Advantage Multi continuously, so they are getting heart worm meds.

Is once a year enough?

Sounds like you should give it to your dog twice a year.

Both of mine get an annual test and take a monthly heartworm pill.

I test mine every other year. I would test more often if it were an outside dog though.

Mine are pretty much inside dogs.

Of course they are saying that. Have they given you the hard sell for a $128K teeth cleaning yet?

keep dogs on meds. and have never tested. Never had an issue. Only test if they have been off meds 3-6 months or never been on meds. Its a waste other than that

After a quick Google session, advice seems pretty consistent. Once per year as long as you keep the preventatives current. If you miss a month or are late, test immediately, then six months later, then back to the yearly.

I had a dog test positive even on the monthly preventative. It's not 100% effective. He gets meds twice a month now and gets tested twice a year.

if you have your dog on heartworm medication you don't need to be tested for heartworms

also, don't believe the bullshite of,"territorial exposure due to the condition in La..", and all that bullshite

once a month and your golden

If the doctor starts suggesting I get those tests twice as often as typically indicated, with no reason for it, then yes. Heartworm preventatives are pretty damn close to 100% effective when given monthly. Unless the OP is not disclosing the fact that he/she regularly skips months, having a dog tested twice a year is unnecessary.

My doctor checks me for testicular cancer bi-weekly, better safe than sorry.

My wife is a vet. She gives the dogs the same heart worm meds that she gives horses. Ivermectin?
