Please clarify.
My impression was they are required if you work in a union shop.

yes, the union acts as your agent. agents don't work for free.

You don't have to join and pay dues in Louisiana, but you really don't want to be, "that guy."

I believe in Louisiana they are voluntary as we are a right to work state. Just a guess though.

Right to work state means you don't have to join Union. Non right to work state means you do.

I think it depends on the laws of your state...if you live in a "right to work" state, they are not mandatory...
I am not sure what the state laws of LA specify, though...
ETA: you cannot be required to join a union or pay union dues in LA... LINK

May not be strictly voluntary, but as BTR pointed out (I think) you are "encouraged".

I pay union dues to the teacher's union and it is voluntary.

Not required in LA but obviously you will not be a good "fit" in a union shop if you refuse to pay dues.
There are plenty of merit shops out there that have work so don't feel pressured to join a union shop.
While there are some skilled craftsmen in Union shops a great many are slow and lazy which offsets their skill accordingly.
There is a reason the Unions are all but dead in LA and many successful corporations are anti Union.

I was asking b/c of a comment I made in the Vitter/Edwards debate thread on the Pol. Board.
The other fella was correct.

Not sure how much fire dept unions are different from others. Are you asking if you are forced to pay union dues even if not in union? I'm not in union at fire dept and do not pay union dues. Most of the employers are in the union however.

Even if you're not in a right to work state, you can opt out of paying "non-core" fees/dues.

Right to work is kind of stupid IMO because people can already vote to be union/non-union. Right to work just allows people to opt-out and be free riders when their bargaining unit is already unionized.
Note - the rules for public unions are somewhat different and usually governed by state law, not NLRB.

Way to go, freeloader.

You only pay dues if you're a member of that union. It's up to you to decide if it works in your favor to join. It could be a hard decision or a no brainer. Do what's best for you.

Membership is voluntary but if you join you pay dues

Completely voluntary. Never seen bad things happen for not paying.
My only thing, pretend it is an insurance policy. It gives your a day in court with a lawyer should something ever happen.

I'm a member of California Nurses Association and we have to pay dues to them or to another organization of choice.
