OT Poker Players: Hosting a cash game
Posted by bayouboy33 on 3/3/15 at 8:57 am01
I've been playing poker for 13-14 years or so but I have never played in or hosted a cash game. I've been having tournament style games at my house for years but am looking to change it up a bit. I'm looking for some advice on rules to set, keeping in mind that everyone playing is friends/coworkers. Looking for input on whether to use cash or chips, do I set a end time or let people play until everyone leaves, and most importantly do I make someone play a certain amount of time (or another round of blinds) after a big pot. TIA

Don't take a house cut or be prepared to get raided in bad luck.

You have been playing 13-14 years and have never played in a cash game?

Make them buy chips. People disassociate them with real value. ThT never happens with cash.

I live in SC so there are no casinos. I play with the hand I've been dealt.

Gotcha. 100% have them buy chips and then you cash them out at the end. Don't make any rules like an ending time and let people cash out whenever.

thanks for the input

I would use chips with a cash value. Meaning you buy in with $20 you get $20 worth of chips. This will allow for people to buy in as much as they want but also let people cash out whenever they want to go home. I would raise the blinds over time too. Maybe as the number of players gets smaller.

No problem. I mean, your friends and co-workers probably aren't going to be dicks and leave the second they win a big pot, also some people may want to play very late. The only end time should be when you are ready to kick everyone out.

Is this typical for a cash game? I was always under the impression blinds stay the same

Normally in a cash game there are no time limits. People come and go as they please. If it is all friends and co-workers then you shouldn't have any issues. I'm sure you may have a douchebag or two who will win a huge pot and then bolt, taking tons of money out of circulation, but not much you can do. If you put some rule where they have to play some more time then they can just fold and still walk away with 99% of that money anyway.
Are we talking limit/no-limit? How much money do you think these people will be playing with?

It isn't. If the remaining players want to that is fine but it would be very annoying as a house rule.

If you don't raise blinds people will still be playing at noon the next day. At least that's what I've experienced, but I guess that depends on the seriousness of your players.

IMO:
Make everyone buy chips, but let cash play too
Don't force anyone to play. If someone wins a big pot and quits, leave it to the other players to gripe and coerce acceptable behavior
When you are ready to end the game, give everyone at least 30 minutes notice. Don't end it abruptly unless most players agree on it.
It is your house, so you have final say on everything.

Yes, there is ZERO point in raising blinds in a cash game.
