While posting earlier with a load of laundry running I heard some "different" sounds.

The lower rear seam on 40 gal electric tall (as opposed to short/wide) had split open and was spraying the rear wall of the utility closet.

Is this a decent residential replacement? Only myself and an occasional guest or 2, dishwasher, single load clothes washer and 2 showers total for a load on the thing.

What are the existing water heater's kW ratings?

Storage + kW (or BTU for gas) will determine the total capacity of a water heater.

4500/3380 wattage is on the side label with a 53 Gal 1st hour rating.

This. Have had one on the other house that's almost ten years old now and have had zero issues.

The only way I wouldn't recommend a tankless is if you have a big family.
