I am returning to La. for my grandma's funeral and it got me thinking about how I grew up in La. and honestly my 3 kids really never got to experience the same thing i did. I practically grew up in the woods, fishing, alligator hunting, shooting moccasins on logs, etc. My biggest regret was my kids not getting to experience Mardi Gras. I could never take 3 kids out of school(they have spring break but never the same dates as Mardi Gras) for a week to show them the real Mardi Gras experience. My kids here love the beach, sports, and my two youngest a little camping out. My oldest hates camping out. In closing I got 3 great teens but I would say they would never understand the way I grew up. What about some other OT parents what is your experience?

No, they haven't experienced everything I did but we're making our own traditions that I hope they'll look fondly upon one day.

Nothing wrong with that. Kinda the same here I go surfing alot out here with my daughter and my youngest son. We have a blast so I guess those memories when they get older will mean something well at least I hope.

Brought them to the family land to ride four wheelers like we rode three wheelers back in the day. They also loved going to the camp for boating and fishing as much as we did.

my daughter did not get to experience following the dead around for a few weeks in the summer. I wouldn't trade that time for anything that is current or popular nowadays

My cousin also lives in Jacksonville, she would put her children in the car Friday afterschool catch all the Saturday and Sunday parades. Left Sunday evening.

There are plenty of great parades the weekend before Mardi Gras. Why would you need to take your kids out for a week?

No , my experience as a child was working on a farm after school everyday of my life. My kids will not experience that. Of course I teach them you have to work for what you want in life but they are not my personal slaves.

What are you saying?

Sounds like the same experience I used to have at Disney world. STRESS STRESS. That throwing 3 kids in a car and driving 10 hours one way for 1 day and then driving back 10 hours. Then work on Monday freak that. I said enjoy the Mardi Gras experience not despise it.

I fail to see the problem because I thought this thread was about your kids not getting to have the same childhood experiences.

I had a 200 and all my friends had three wheelers. When we would camp out we would look like hell's angels riding on the levee. There was like 15 of us.

I was responding to the poster that said his sister would drive her and her kids from jacksonville to Mardi Gras. I was giving an analogy about the stress involved. Now get off my lawn son

Sometimes stressful situations make for funny stories and good memories down the line. Your kids won't remember sleeping in the car for hours. To each his own.

Some stuff is different, some is the same. Some is better some is worse, moreso the former.

Sounds like your kids are probably just fine.

Ya know that's the thing. Back in the day, parents used their kids like free labor. Huge gardens, livestock, crops. They would work reg. jobs while the kids did the hard labor. I lived it with no regrets. Taught me alot
The more kids, the bigger the ponderosa

Of course not.

Every Saturday morning I would wake up to watch cartoons with both feet on the tv screen. Now, they basically hang the damn TV from the ceilings.

Hard to do geographically as well as what's acceptable parenting nowadays. My kids won't grow up in a rural setting, so there's no way they'll ride three wheelers, ride in the backs of pickups deep into the muddy woods, crawfish in ditches regularly, be gone from breakfast till dinner riding bikes. Not to mention it's just a different time.

But you're making a different & better life for your kids. They'll grow up & do the same and nostalgicly wish their kids got to experience their lives over again.

Better that than actually try to recreate your life by stubbornly refusing to move for better opportunities like my sister did. "But I want to raise my son like I was raised." She never seemed to understand that the bright spots in our childhood was the love we received, not the geography. Unfortunately, it was my nephew that suffered.

I'm a young father myself but I'd like to think as my daughter gets older I'll kind of have it half/half where she gets to experience some of what I did as growing up but also make new traditions.

Me and my wife have bought our first camper recently and have been going out as much as we can in it. My old man never did that for us but he did take us camping the old fashioned way.
