OT on Mental Health

After reading a good bit of the posts on here, the vast majority of you would probably qualify for some certain, scientifically determinable mental illness.
What are your thoughts on mental illness in today's society?
Is it a growing problem that we refuse to address and continually put off? It is overdiagnosed and a direct product of the big pharmaceuticals and MDs who just write a prescription for the illness?

1/2 of the world population has some sort of mental issues

I have a pretty serious drug problem. Don't blame it on mental health like most people want to do, but got clean by just becoming a man. Most mental illness in this country is an excuse for not taking responsibility for your actions.

Makes you wonder if the qualifications of something being a "mental illness" are too lax.

Mental health is so personal, most issues are the result of a person digging deeper in their own head.
I can't stand it when people say it is something that is "ignored" by society. Try dealing with a person with serious issues; one person can affect an entire family or social group. At the end of the day, when it comes to mental health, that person has to have the desire to get better. If that desire isn't there, there is not one thing the persons family, the state or anyone else can do to get that person back on track.

In the words of Clark W. Griswold, Jr., "I think you're all fricked in the head."

I think you're grossly confusing being an addict with having a legitimate mental illness.

I wouldn't say that, because not all mental illness is created equal. For instance, chemical addiction can be a mental illness, but oftentimes the individual allowed it to progress to that point. Who's burden should it be to deal with these people? A lot of them can still function in society, if they cannot, they aren't going to take too well to being captives/wards of the state.
I have gotten into quite a few heated discussions on this topic. I hear lots of folks say "They aren't getting the medicine they need!" Yeah ok, let's just pretend they can get their medicine for free...so who is going to make them take that medicine? Who is going to monitor them and be accountable for them going forward? Who is going to prop them up along the way to try and mend the self-esteem issues that may have lead to their current condition? Because if those answers are not given, you now have the possibility of people walking the streets that otherwise don't have a place in society, with a pocket full of controlled substances given to them by their government after limited consultation.
It is a problem, but not one with easy answers.

No I'm not. These things often go hand in hand.

Easy, I'd play heavy metal music when you're happy and then Kenny G when you were mad.
