I have a question about this. Does everyone "match," or do some get left out, and what do they do then?

No not everyone will match. Some may not match and then they will have to go through something called The Scramble. Which is them just taking whatever residency spots have not been filled yet. Its the bottom of the barrel

Students found out Monday whether they matched or not, but do not find out where until today.

Those who were notified they didn't match on Monday then re-enter the system and try to match op with programs and hospitals who did not fill their residency spots through the match. The process is repeated each day until all the spots are filled. It's called the scramble.

Those who don't match and/or don't get a scramble spot are SOL and can re-apply to residencies next year.

It's based on a large number of things and it really depends on the program and how they rank applicants (board scores, grades, interview skills, letter of reference is huge). You can submit an application to any residency you choose. The residencies can then select however many applicants they want to interview. An application does not guarantee an interview. After interviews are over sometime in February, all applicants submit a "Rank List" where they list their preferred programs. Programs submit a rank list of applicants and some computer program "matches" them. It's the dumbest fricking thing in the world.

A friend of mine wasn't sure what he wanted to do during the match process, so he did a year in what was called Transitional residency.

He went into dermatology after that.

Too add, this year's match will be most compete it has ever been. 4 ears approximately 6-8 new medical schools were opened adding an additional 1000-1500 students applying to the match.

We did a crawfish boil last year.

SOAPing is much better than the scramble. But either way not matching on the first around sucks but is not the end of the world.

Oh

I will not be present for the match, as I am still in this dump of an island.
