OT Lawyers and Cops - police officer directing traffic
Posted on 6/1/17 at 7:47 pm

on a main highway for a private business? Not a school, not even a church, but a private business. The traffic at the highland rd and Old Perkins intersection is already bad enough. Now you have traffic backing up down Highland in both directions and also backing up on I-10 eastbound, because the off ramp heading north on highland gets stopped too. Blue bayou has a huge parking lot across from Home Depot, that requires patrons to use the traffic light like everyone else when exiting. The cop sits at the other park exit for the fatties that can't be bothered to park and walk across the bridge into the park. How in the hell is this legal? Am I within my rights to ignore the cop directing traffic here?

Yeah, go ahead and ignore the cop and enjoy your tickets

Absolutely, what could go wrong?

He was only there today because the lights were out dummy

Comply or die. This is how you end up getting shot

So if I want a cop to come direct traffic at my business, they will do it no problem on the tax payers dime? I get directing traffic for a school and even for a church I guess, but a private business?

Nope, he was there last Friday and all lights were working. I sat through 12 light cycles waiting to turn left onto Old Perkins because he's stopping traffic for all people leaving the park.

No! Simmer down. Call Naka and get him on it.

Probably have to pay for them to do it off-duty if it wasn't an established issue (i.e. traffic lights out). Even the schools here in Louisville have to pay LMPD off-duty or OT pay in order for them to come direct school traffic.

Wrong. A unit is at the private entrance/exit of Blue Bayou 4-6 pm from June to late August.
ETA: Could be working extra duty, but I usually see dep/sheriff doing that, not state troopers.

If he's off duty then why do I have to comply? Get another hobby to make money in your free time and quit making everyone's afternoon drive in BR even worse than it already is. Right?

I feel if he's off duty and I'm abiding by all traffic laws, why should I have to stop because a cop with too much time on his hands wants to make an extra buck near one of the busiest intersections in Baton Rouge. I'm actually surprised it hasn't been discussed.

You put your big girl panties on next time he is there and you just ignore him all together. Report back let us know what happened.

Clueless people make me laugh.

In a lot of jurisdictions, off duty officers have the right to enforce the law if they're acting within the "color of the law". I know here, if you're an off duty officer and you pass an accident on the road, you're obligated to stop and assist until an on duty officer arrives. So I'm sure it's all within the lines of that.

If I know what you're talking about, the light was out earlier.

I'm not clueless and I don't intend to run the guy over. Answer the question.
How can a private company solicit law enforcement to help patrons exit more swiftly while destroying traffic flow and causing a more dangerous drive home for many?
It makes zero sense unless you are the cop ($$$$) and the private business ($$$$). Screw the teachers and house moms.

A cop is there all week from 4-6 pm. It wasn't just today because the light was out. They sit at the private drive directing traffic.

If he has his car and is in his official uniform he's not off duty. He is on a detail assignment that is being paid for by a private entity rather than the tax payers. Another example would be traffic cops escorting a funeral detail or working security/managing traffic at LSU game.
