I've been trying to get back into lifting recently, so I got some protein powder and bars. I've been wondering how much protein you should take in one dose and how frequently you should take that dose. When I was younger, I had heard your body can only process 40g of protein at one time, but recently I heard it was more like 25g. What is the maximum amount of protein your body can absorb and how often should you take that dose?

Whey is around 24g, according to studies. Anything more than that at one time is wasted.

Mid-morning
Mid-afternoon
Casein type late evening

Every day.

Make sure one of those two during the day is immediately after your workout.

There are lots of different answers.

The scientific answer when I was in a masters exercise physiogy program was 1.0-1.5 grams per kg of body weight.

Honestly I think 1g per lean pound of body mass, 1g per pound of bw, and what I mentioned above all are valid answers.

Of course this will fluctuate depending on fitness goals, total caloric intake and timing of intake, % of carbs and fats, etc.

When you say 1g per kg of body weight you mean daily correct?

1gram per pound BW.

So if you weigh 175lbs, make sure you're getting at least 175g of protein per day in your diet.

1 gram per lb of bodyweight is a rule of thumb, but dont think for a second you have to get to 240 grams. As long as youre around 180 or so, that's plenty to support muscle growth.

Yes divide that up 4-6 times a day your getting 25-30g if its a little over who cares. You aren't in the Olympia.

Of course everyone's metabolism is a little different so some people will better metabolize protein more than others.

I feel it takes my muscles too long to recover if I'm not drinking protein. Could be mental though.

You don't HAAAAAVE to have 240g of protein per day, they're just saying that if you DO have that much it's not a big deal.

I'm a relatively small guy and I try to take in a bunch of protein per day, and I still don't get up to 1g per pound of body weight. But I've still seen definite results just from that and a good diet and exercise.

Don't panic about trying to get to 240g of a protein a day...that's not going to be what gets you to or stops you from meeting your goals.
