OT DIYers, what deck stain is the best?

Restaining my outdoor wood deck this weekend. I'm trying to decide between water-based and oil-based.
From what research I've been able to do on the interwebs, I've found that water-based used to get a bad rap, but is in favor now.
Wondering which brands hold up best to our tropical summers in the South and hearing about any good advice.

Have had the most success with oil-based here in GA.

Oil based can be nasty to skin and clothes but normally have worked better for me. Just be careful with it.

darker the color and less translucence the more protection.
I use the yellow can, I think its Olympic, oil based, Australian something color and has lasted quite well

Did mine last year with a water based stain from Behr. Still looks great.

Just a little stain - it won't hurt you.

Same here last year and has held up OK, but my deck was built in 2000. Deck gets a lot of foot traffic and tree debris

TWP 1500. It gets very good reviews. The darker the stain the longer it will last. Staining goes on much easier than paint. Use a foam finger roller...

just used TWP on mine. stuff is legit.
i used the 100 i think (the one that has the more VOCs) and isn't available in all 50 states.
took a couple weeks in all but well worth it.
i used yellawood pressure treated pine so if you have questions...
eta here you go. STAY AWAY FROM BEHR/HOME DEPOT!!!!!!!

But also the darker the hotter it is to walk on....so I guess that should be factored in to the equation.

from what i've seen its SUPER expensive compared to TWP.
TWP is $150ish for a 5 gallon tub, cabot timber is a ton more expensive at like $40-50 a gallon.

I have ordered direct from TWP, website might be specialty sealants or something similar with free shipping.

What kind of prep work needs to be done before staining? Do I need to pressure wash deck or is just hosing it off ok? Do I need to sand it? I've been putting it off and would almost rather just build a new deck than stain the old one

it depends on the condition, there isnt a one fits all answer, except the one that involves every step

yes, if its new you need to do this to get the builder 'wax' off the wood
if its old, you need to do this to clean & prep the wood.
they make kits; typically have 2 parts, a cleaner and then a finishing wash/PH balancer so the wood really takes the stain.
honestly, if you're going to spend hundreds of dollars on stain, spending another $50 to properly prep the wood before applying is more important than anything.
in short: if you don't properly prep the wood before staining you're throwing money away.

PS does diesel really work if you're not trying to change the color?
