"All the Way to Berlin," by James Megellas. It was written by my kid's friend's grandfather. He is the most decorated officer in the history of the 82nd Airborne. He was a paratrooper in WWII, and this is his memoirs - it's a book that tells about his experiences as a guy on the front lines. Most WWII books focus on the guys who guided the war and their strategies - and are written by guys who weren't there. This is a very gritty and truthful account. This guy has some incredible feats, and there is a push to get him the Medal of Honor. He's 98 years old and still has a commanding presence about him.

C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy is the best series of books that I've ever read.

I'm a huge book nerd so I'll list some categories
Fantasy:
kingskiller Series by Pat Rothfus
Song of Ice and Fire
Wheel of Time
S by JJ Abrams
Gentlemen Bastards by Scott Lynch
Suspense thrillers:
Greg Iles (already said on this thread but I'll second it. Get ready for some white guilt though)
Michael Connely
Gillian Flynn
Vince Flynn
Clive Cussler
Brad Thor
James Rollins
David Balducci
If you pick any of those and like them, congrats, you have multiple other books from each author you'll like. I've probably read 30 - 40 books from the Authors above in the last 3 years and am no where near reading all of one author except Vince Flynn and that's because he died.
Historical:
Killing series by Bill o'Reilly
Anything by Eric Larson. (Devil in the White City was a fantastic read and probably my favorite non fiction book in a long time)
Michael Shaara always writes a good book
Unbroken (infinity better than the movie)
American Sniper
Lone Survivor

I like Greg but I feel super guilty for being white every book of his. Great writer though.

I did enjoy the Martian.
Super enjoyed that one.
Super sad they can Matt Damon to play the character. Chris Pratt's sarcasm would have killed this role.

Anything by Christopher Moore, Carl Hiassen, or Tom Robbins.
The last two authors are great, especially Robbins. I'm not familiar with Christopher Moore so I just ordered a couple of his cheap used paperbacks.
The last book I read that I really liked was Population 451 by Michael Perry.
