If I have a friend who sued a guy and there was a settlement with a gag order, can one be in trouble for just mentioning the gag order? For example, let's say a guy, chris, walks up to the guy who was sued and says I've heard a lot about you. To which he replies what have you heard? Chris replies, well, I'm not allowed to talk about it with the gag order and all. Could chris be in trouble for mentioning the gag order above? Thx

I assume there's a signed document with specific terms/instructions. It's not like the judge just says, "ok, there's a gag order, nobody say shite about this until it's over."

No, but Chris is almost certainly allowed to write about it on a web forum where records of conversations will exist in virtual space for all of human existence and beyond.

I can't think of a reasonable scenario where a judge would order a gag order about a gag order.

Gag order = judge imposes on litigants and lawyer during ongoing litigation, usually during a trial, to avoid any publicity.

Non-disclosure agreement = part of a settlement where the plaintiff agrees not to mention what he was paid to settle, or that he even was paid.

How does Chris, who isn't even a party to the "gag order" get in trouble for mentioning it?

Why would Chris even initiate that conversation? In the situation you described, Chris should've just kept on walking. *Not intended to be legal advice.
