I have been told by my supervisor and others, that the best way to advance in State Government (currently work in government) is to get a Master's Degree (preferably an MBA or MPA). I looked into a couple MPA programs in Louisiana, and they offer a JD dual enrollment.

I have thought about possibly going into Tax Law or Corporate Law, but never really seriously. Would it be advantageous to go for both, while I am in school, or should I stay with an MPA?

If you use the JD the MPA will be worthless. And likely vice versa.

Completely disagree, but all depends on how you use it.

MPA and JD by themselves are not worth your time.

The LSU mpa program is the one to look into imo.

This.

I have a few colleagues who did the JD/MBA program. They're sitting exactly where they are if they had just gotten their JD by itself.

Also, don't go to law school. Student loans aren't worth it.

Obviously the JD is much more versatile, especially from a good school.

If you're sure an MPA is worthwhile for you and you want to be in that field, I wouldn't spend significantly more money on the JD. But if you're not sure about those things, and can get into a dual program that is good and not terribly expensive, it's a decent idea.

FWIW the MBA is infinitely more useful than the MPA outside of the governmental context.

There is absolutely no reason to get a JD unless you know you want to practice law.

People say "well, I could still use it for my career." Then just get a MBA or MPA. A law degree is more costly in time, money, and effort. Unless you know that you want to be a lawyer there is no reason to go to law school.

I would personally disagree on JD/MBA if you can get into in house roles and/or corporate finance stuff. The second is a very narrow field and the other is in huge bemoans.

Outside of that, generally not worth the time and money.

That is what I figured. Just thought I would ask the attorneys on here.

JDs are not versatile. That is an urban legend and/or a past truism

I have a law degree but I do not practice law. Learn from my mistake.

I've been looking at doing either the MPA or MBA program at LSU. Will probably start in the fall. I plan on working in the public sector but I think an MBA would be way more invaluable.

What do y'all think?

When I first went back and forth on whether I would go to Graduate School, I thought an MBA would be better as well.

The MPA has come back up over and over, because I hope to get into the realm of public policy, or something of the sort.

I just think an MBA would do well in the public sector as well as private, but an MPA wouldn't really crossover the same

The only thing keeping me from even thinking of practicing law is that I have heard from people on here, as well as friends that got their JD and passed the bar, that it is SUPER DIFFICULT to find a job as an attorney.
