Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee sprinter who rose to worldwide fame for overcoming his disability to compete in the 2012 Olympic Games, was sentenced on Wednesday to six years in prison for murdering his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, inside his home in 2013.

Mr. Pistorius was taken directly from the courtroom to a prison near Pretoria to start serving his sentence. He will have to serve half of his term before being eligible for parole.

Judge Thokozile Matilda Masipa of the High Court in Pretoria cited “mitigating” factors in handing out a sentence that was significantly shorter than the 15-year minimum requested by prosecutors.

Apparently he can get out after 3 years if he meets some requirements...

Because he showed remorse

Light sentences for murder happen in the USA a lot too.

It's pretty wild.

the worst part about this, was that the black judge was hindering the case and final judgement of sentencing, because she didn't want to give him jail time.

looks like a variation on the Scots' "not proved". not saying he was innocent, but IMHO the judge believed his bs about not knowing it was not an intruder.

Hopefully he can get his legs under him in prison and learn from this.

Yep, sounds like he didn't have two legs to stand on in this case.

I thought he was convicted a few years ago. Was he tried again?
