Operating a bulldozer

Has anyone ever operated one? Considering renting one to do some cleaning up around my property. Is there any special knowledge required and what brand is best?

Just hop on there man. You will figure it out.

Ran one for a couple years. Wouldn't recommend using one if you've never operated one before. I'd suggest getting a skid steer or throwing some steaks on the grill and hiring a fellow oter

Really can't be that hard. They let people with GEDs operate them everyday

What?
Forward, back, left right. Blade up, down tilt. Run shite over and clear that shite yourself.

You should be able to push some dirt around although I don't recommend it. Surely you have a friend with that kind of knowledge who'll do you a favor.

familiarize yourself with the blade, this is the most complex part of the bulldozer. Grew up around excavators bulldozers and 18 wheelers.

They are easy enough to operate.
2 things- on a rental, any and all damage is on you.
The rental company will require you to carry insurance on it.
ETA- it's a rental - why are you concerned about brand?
Just be upfront with the guy at Hertz, RSC, Sunbelt or whomever you choose.

They are a blast but be careful, it's easy to gouge up your property. A buddy dropped one off and he cleared some pasture, then left it for a few days so I could play around on it and clean some fence rows. I got in a wet spot and and half way sunk the thing. He had to bring a trac hoe to get it out.

Yes. I work for Caterpillar.

If you don't know what you're doing you can damage your property, hurt yourself or someone around you, or damage the machine and then have to pay for said damage.

And it's not even close.

Clearing brush is easy enough. Building shite like lakes, golf courses and pretty much anything that matters takes skill and perhaps a little talent. My dad had a dozer operator (RIP Clarence), that was a pure artist on a bulldozer.

It's funny you say that cats are the best when every big job I've been on they've used either a Volvo or a Hyundai.

Yeah, because CAT is more expensive.

Easy to learn, hard to master

When I was attending heavy equipment school in the army we had a guy that was mentally slow who got on a crawler tractor and hit two other crawler tractors.
Crawler tractors are easy to run but hard to master.
I learned on stakes to level land now GPS machine control makes anyone an expert operator.
I own a 450 JD with 3d mc2 and love it for the farm.
You can hurt someone if you don't know what you are doing,
I would be surprised a rental company would rent a crawler tractor to a person off the street. They usually require an account and a certain level of insurance.

Nothing runs like a deere. I bought a 01 850c lgp series 2 with 10,000 hours for 40gs, i use it everyday clearing my 40 acres, runs like a top.
If u have never run a dozer better get somebody who has to run it, r u gona mess ur land up bad. Find a good place to pile up the brush bc it will b a eyesore for awhile. My biggest problem with clearing land is not pileing up brush, its geting rid of the piles. I burn what i can then bury the rest with a john deere 200lc trachoe. Good luck

Spent half the day on our little dozer today (I was bored) D6E, if you get one, get on it and get used to how it moves, stops, turns etc then figure out the blade. Always remember they will run over almost anything and you can tear up some shite with one.
