Online Job Search: How important are cover letters

I am beginning to review some of my old cover letters. Alot of positions online seem to ask for them.
Does anyone know how important cover letters are for online applications. Are they used as a means to weed-out people or are they ignored.

Will you just get a job already

Don't be lazy and just make one.
It's an outdated practice, but if you get asked for one just provide it.
Put some effort into it the first time, and every subsequent time all you need to do is make some edits for the job. It's not a big deal.
Definitely make sure you include your career on tigerdroppings.

No cover letter is going to overcome your whiny bitchassness and insecurity about where you went to school

Anything you put your name is very important.

I don't include them. I also rarely get feedback from positions I apply to. I applied to one today...and I've already written it off. Oh well, I mostly like my job.

i always put on there that whomever is reading this, I am coming for their job and theirs alone

I worked in recruiting temporarily. For the most part, the manager wants to look at a summary of your qualifications. They are not going to waste time reading a cover letter, don't do anything special with your resume. I will post mine to give you an example.

If you did this, I would really appreciate it.

I honestly am trying. I can not seem to find a company willing to give me a chance. I am willing to work outside of my degrees in a more neutral position (like an analyst).

Under work experience, where I list each job I have it underlined. For example
Work Experience
Walmart
- greeter.

Thanks. It seems like a pretty simple format

In most cases all they want is an outline of your work experience, education and a highlight of skills that could be relevant to the job you are applying to.

Well I fricking hope so.
BTW everything is physics...and nothing is graduate EE. FMEA, OSHA safety...act like its the most interesting thing you've ever heard and you can't goddamn wait to learn more about it.

Puts you at the top of the list for attention.
If I get a resume with no cover letter, I assume someone just took the time to send out mass employment resumes and may not have a passion for the job.

I never attach one due to the fact that hiring managers blab all over the internet about not reading them. Then, there are the others that say to include them, but that they can only hurt you, not help. I also don't feel like writing them, and that's the main reason.
I don't have a job though, so TIFWIW. Lately, I have resorted to looking for jobs >1hr away and applying for jobs I'm not qualified for

Some people will argue that you need to put an objective on it, for my experience its a waste of space because its usually a line of bullshite in which people try to be "creative" by putting something "unique" to stand out, when in reality, its probably just a re-worded version of the same shite everyone else says.

What?
Communication skills are important. I've got as much attention from my covers as I have my resume.
