A previous neighbor's father was a B-24 co-pilot in the 15th AF out of Italy. He just turned 94 about a month ago.

When asked about his service, he was usually polite, but deflected...
Stuff like "Italy was nice.", I got there towards the end of the war.", "We didn't do much.", "I only flew 17 missions", etc.

After we talked a few times, and I told him my dad was in B-29s, he opened up slightly. I also knew a little bit more than average about the timeline of the war, so maybe that relaxed him some. He got to Italy in mid-1943, which wasn't anywhere close to "the end of the war". I asked him if he flew in the Ploesti raids. His response was, "Yeaaaah, that was pretty rough."

He was obviously uncomfortable, so I let it go, but I'd love to hear that story.

He's a great guy with a great sense of humor. He once told me, "I was usually scheduled to fly every third day. If I woke up the next morning, I considered it to be a miracle. Now, at my age, if I wake up in the morning, every day is a miracle."

My grandmother said that once the B-24s rolled off the line, they would fuel them up, fly them once in a circle around the field, and head towards England.

And the ferry pilot was very possibly a female. WASP pilots ferried B-17s, B-24s, B-26s and other types (I'm sure) to Europe. Every women ferrying aircraft freed up a male pilot for combat missions.

I knew a retired Pan-Am pilot who ferryied bombers during WWII with female pilots. The bombers were stripped down and had extra fuel tanks. Not all of them had full avionics and communication gear, there was a light beacon mounted on the rear of the lead plane and the followers would stay watching that signal to the intermediary stops. Unless it rained?

Ascension Island I think and Belem in Brazil and Liberia were some of the places he mentioned.

He alluded to taking advantage of the opportunity for some sexy time with the female pilots associated in the endeavor. He also said we (the US) simply lost a good number of planes due to the inexperience of some of the pilots and their lack of long-distance over water navigation expertise.

Biggest DICK moment of my life!!! Met a guy at work who told me about a gun shot wound in his medical history. WW2 and in the Pacific in 1945. He was shot in some damn island. I said, "damn I thought it was over by then?" Old fella got mad. sort of like I was being some stolen valor jackass. I could not get "I'm sorry" out of my mouth fast enough.

He apparently got shot after the war ended and they were clearing these islands of Japanese that hadn't got the "memo" yet. I felt like a complete a-hole. I'd have loved to ask him some questions, but I'm sure he'd have either told me to frick myself at that point. Or punched me in the face like Buzz Aldrin punched that "moon landing conspiracy" guy a few years back.

The flower selling girl was from Greenville, Texas. She ended up marrying some (to quote people who knew her) "rich older man from New Orleans" when she was about a year out of high school.

Great group of photos, thanks.

And after all the bloodshed and strife to perfect the world we end up with our two current presidential candidates.
