Supposedly survived the Holocaust and was a suit or shoe salesman at Goudchaux. Wondered whatever happened to him. He could be tough.

He was awesome. I went to the new library last week and was thinking about BRSA days. I have a friend that I will ask about it tomorrow.

Godchaux's had a sporting goods section where they also sold tennis shoes. He worked in there.
I never knew anything about his Holocaust ties. The store was owned by the Sternbergs. Now I am curious about their history as well.
ETA It was Goudchaux's.
"With a mercantile line extending back five generations to a small shop in eighteenth-century Germany, the Sternbergs were born to be shopkeepers. In 1936, as Nazi harassment of Jews intensified, Erich smuggled $24,000 out of Germany and settled in Baton Rouge. His wife and three children joined him a year later, and in 1939, Erich bought Goudchaux's and set about transforming it from a nondescript apparel shop into a true department store"

Just ordered the book off of Ebay.
I'll tell you another family: The Imaharas. Great family. Mr. Walter was my next door neighbor growing up. Got a silver in weightlifting in the Pan Am games. His family lost everything as his father was a Japanese American and Pop and his wife were sent to an internment camp during the war. They moved to Hammond and eventually started Imahara's nursery.

I have no memory of the Imaharas other than they had a nursery.
It seems as if I remember hearing that Ralph died of cancer. If I had to guess, he was probably born in the early 1920's.

My second grade teacher was an Imahara. This was at Greenbrier Elementary. I can't remember her first name though.

Ms. Sumi. Wonderful lady. Would pay me to grade her papers sometimes. Then she became a travel agent at Malcolm.

Ralph Meyer was one of the founders of the soccer league in Baton Rouge. The league had three age groups or 6 teams, 18 total. Everything for the league was purchased at Goudchaux’s. At one time Ralph a buyer for sporting goods at Goudchaux’s. He a good man but very grumpy, he was demoted all the down to a suit salesman at Main Street. The BRSA board voted him out because he didn’t get along with people. Ralph was from Germany, I don’t know about the Holocaust, became a born again Christian and still yelled at customers. Sternberg’ were very loyal and didn’t fire him. He was the only employee at Goudchaux’s who could yell at customers.
