re: Oilfield workers with no experience make $120,000 a year in North Dakota

I know people working in the Eagle Ford Shale (South Texas) that knew someone that are making 100k+ with no experience in certain fields. Even the lowest of the totem pole general laborers are making upper 5 figures, working 70-90 hour weeks with all that OT.

That is called working 2 and a half jobs. not really that good of pay if you aren't breaking 100k with that many hours.

If some people can get the work, and are so oriented, good for them. I can see someone doing it for a couple of years or so. It's like guys who worked on the pipeline here in the 70's, they worked awful hours, but came back to La with cash to buy a house.

Or they could stay at home and work the same amount of hours. Now if they bolted to make 150K with 40 hr weeks and 500hrs of OT a year I would get that.

All you hear on the media is how evil oil is. Yet just about everything is made from it, almost all our energy comes from it and has the best paying jobs around. It's literally our number 1 export. The amount of jobs and money tied into oil is staggering. Infrastructure alone accounts for thousands of jobs

The cost of living up there is also crazy high, like on par with new York city.

I imagine most people are bolting for ND simply because the opportunity to make more money is there. Most aren't there to put down roots, it's a boomtown. They are there to work as many hours as possible and make as much money as they can. I think it would be interesting if you didn't have any ties to experience that kind of boom. This kind of opportunity isn't available everywhere, and who knows how long it can last.

Why is that? Influx of peeps and lack of existing infrastructure?

re: Oilfield workers with no experience make $120,000 a year in North Dakota
I worked on the Western Slope in Colorado after my training in Wyoming. We were originally outside a town called Rifle.

Small town. I watched that place grow so much in 4 years it was unreal. They put in fast food joints, hotels, etc. Fuel was expensive, groceries higher. Women were loose. All because of the almighty dollar. Oil field hands have a rough side to them.

Small towns deal with all the bull shite because they know 50% of oil field hands will spend their money faster than they made it.

I worked all the time. I didn't have a set schedule like rig hands. My days off were on rig moves or when I requested after I'd been there a year. I remember new rig hands just starting work. They would head home and show up two weeks later with a new ride and broke, needing to make the next check.

These towns know what kind of money is being made. They know how easy a lot of those folks will spend all their money. Bars, strip clubs, hotels, are going to make an absolute killing in the area of a boom.

Up in north Dakota, workers at McDonalds make $20 an hour because prices are so jacked up and they could go work in the field for so much more $. I've heard a 1 bedroom apt is like $1800 a month. It's crazy. It's boomtown at its finest.

so 120K is a little above minimum wage if they are working the long hours. not surprising uneducated would flock there thinking they are making bank.

I wouldn't doubt it. I never looked for a residence of any kind near where I was working.

When I was in Wyoming, I'd go and get a hotel in Cheyene or run down to Denver and get a room. I was single, had direct deposit set up so there was no need to go all the way back to Arkansas. I flew a couple old flames up in the beginning until I started meeting women in those areas.

Its just a crazy life and it does crazy things to little towns. Those towns just see what is going on now as well. They build all this crap, and in 10-15 years all those places are going to be vacant and look like a ghost town.

It probably beats what they make in their current situation.

What do regular labor jobs pay these days? I'd guess 13-15 an hour? Most guys probably begging for more hours localy to make more money? I'd guess that.

Hell, in ND if they start out at 30/hr, they're actually making 45/hr because they are getting 44 hrs OT and only 40 hrs regular time.

I'm also sure there is some bonus money floating around. As a MWD we'd get anywhere from 1-3k per hole if we hit our spot within so many feet. Rig hands would get upwards of 2k if they did their part with no injuries.

With the advance in technology in the industry, you can drill upwards of 22 holes on one location in about 3 months. Bonus money alone a hand could be looking at 30-40k if bonuses are still what they were in Colorado.

That's good money, no matter how long they work a day.

Well, they are making bank. Hanging onto it is the trick. If anyone is considering giving it a go, a travel trailer will save you big $ and allow you to have your own stuff, (guns, electronics, bbq grills and patio furniture will all walk off from a by the week motel).

My background is mostly pipelining, but I've seen a hundred boom towns.
