At my old office we had someone that would show up 5-10 minutes early every day and then spend the first 45-60 minutes in the kitchen, getting coffee and chatting with anyone that walked in. And I'd get looks for being 15 min late.
I've only ever had one office job, so I honestly thought this was just a thing that everyone does
Also, "on time" seems to mean walking in the door at 8:00 AM or 5 minutes after. This holds true for meetings with clients as well.
No idea why teachers/professors were so strict about tardiness in school.

I actually work with a guy who started smoking just so he could take breaks with the other smokers.

Why can't the person who wants to work out wake up earlier in the morning and work out before work or else work out after work? Why should someone make their workout routine their employer's problem? I wake up well before 5:00 am so I can work out, put in a full day at work, and then spend time with the family after work. People who workout on their employer's time are undisciplined and selfish.

I work on the same floor as a lady who has an obsession with Tim McGraw. Her cube is covered on the inside with cut out magazine like posters Of him. Many with his shirt of.
When I first started I was surprised by it and joked with my team about that is 4 women and 1 other guy that I wanted to put the sports illustrated calendar up just for the hell of it. They suggested I should, just to see what would happen.
I can only imagine the outrage from some of them women though.

It's all about perception. I've had a high level boss tell me that even though I get there earlier than most and put in more hours than many people in the office, I don't usually past 4:30 PM, and that it can be seen in a negative light.

I mean, you have an argument here.

Negative stigma out of being seen using your assigned lunch time to take a power nap even though you don't come back late, and instead come back refreshed and more productive.
I work with 5 older fellas.... I'm 38.
One leaves for lunch to go home and the other 4 all sleep. One has a nap roll in his office. No one has a problem with it.

Whenever I am late because of the horrid traffic in this town I always feel better when I see the smokers in the parking lot. I may be late but I am not screwing off for 20-30 minutes or more each day.

I got written up for masturbating at my desk. My door was closed but not locked. They said it's disgusting. However, the guy next to me cuts his toe nails at his desk regularly with the door open and no one says a word. I find that more disgusting.

I guarantee the perception is that you're chronically late, as reported by those smokers, and it has been mentioned to your boss.

Funny you should mention this. The smoking supervisors walked around my vehicle and "inspected" it while smoking. I know this because I received an email with all the supervisors CC'd with their findings. Incompetent doesn't begin to describe the three stooges in charge.

Can't smoke on our campus but you can go walk or go to the gym anytime you want.

Similar thing at my office is cellphones. If you get up and go chat with a co-worker for 20 minutes about your kids or their divorces it's nbd. Spend more than 3 minutes on your cellphone to take a break and refresh? You can catch hell.

15 minutes to smoke a cigarette?
Posted on 8/2/15 at 9:25 am to HeadyMurphey
I ziptied some tuna heads to my friend's truck's undercarriage (without telling him). After like 4 days the smokers at his place of employment complained of the smell and he was threatened to be fired or park his truck elsewhere.

I do blow at my desk. I have found a statistical relationship with my intake of cocaine and the rise of my net worth

The smokers at my office don't smoke solo. It's like women heading to the bathroom at a club/bar. They will always grab another smoker so they can bullshite the entire time outside. The BS, the time it takes to make your way to the smoke area and back, plus 1-2 cigs equals 15 min easily.
