The city's poverty rate has remained near 30%. And according to one analysis, African-American households in the city earn more than 50% less than their white counterparts -- well above the national average

Now, I believe most of the reasons behind that are self-inflicted. I got an undergrad degree, went on to get Master's degree, and I work very hard to move up in my profession. I have encountered situations where I felt like I was being overlooked, but I never let that stood in my way. If I'm not appreciated in one company, there are others that will value my skillset. If blacks as a whole focused on self-progression and placed a higher value on work ethic and self-respect and pass those traits on to their kids then those type of statistics won't be nearly as high. I have no sympathy for those who just sit back, complain about how the white man is holding them back, and don't even try to make their lives better.

This is more a function of regional demographics than anything.

There is essentially no white working class in the city proper and a very small white middle class.

Of course, it's fun to just throw out the numbers as they are and make it look like there some spooky racist boogeyman behind them, I guess.

But underneath the visible recovery lie persistent racial and economic inequities that haven't receded a decade since the storm.

There are so many jobs available in the tourism, restaurants, hotels etc, here that if you're not working you're not looking to work. You can almost walk up to any of those Hollywood trucks and get some type of work still. Cry me a fricking river.

Why is the lower 9th ward always the go to place when dignitaries visit New Orleans? There are other areas that were hit just as hard that will never get mentioned or visited. Why continue to focus on the area where its own residents didn't give a shite. Why not go walk through the Gentilly, Lakeview, Pontchartrain Park, Nola East, St. Bernard, Slidell, or Gulf Coast area? Instead of walking through the brand new mixed income housing, why doesn't Moon, Jr. take the president through neighborhoods that did come together and rebuild. This anniversary should be remembering the tragedy of Katrina, but we should also focus on how far we have come since.

Well, if you could convey your thoughts without saying things like all the Lakeview people are at work, maybe people wouldn't call you racist.

Downvote away, but there is a way to say it without throwing in the racist stuff that is obvious to everyone.

The lower 9 wasn't the only place black people lived either, you know?

It's sort of become the cliche of the storm, though, and the President is really nothing if not a cliche at this point. Oh well, his traffic shite is not going to affect me, so c'est la vie.

The interstates began shutting down about 10 minutes before he was on the road. I would think anytime between 4:45 to 5:30 depending on the area you'll be coming from.
