The New York Daily News recently reported that New York City Health Department rules ban anybody from accepting payment in exchange for caring for an animal outside of a licensed kennel or boarding facility – and homes can’t become licensed to board pets. This means that any pet sitters, but especially users of popular pet-sitting apps such as Rover, are breaking the law. At least two apartment residents have already been hit with violations for caring for pets without a permit. Fines start at $1000.

According to Health Department spokesman Julien Martinez, the ban is justified by public health concerns:

“To ensure the health and safety of pets and reduce risks to public health, the NYC Health Code requires certain businesses to obtain a Health Department permit and comply with necessary regulations – this includes animal boarding facilities and kennels. We also conduct inspections of these facilities to make sure animals would be secure and safe.”

Absolutely ridiculous. Crime. Filth. And homelessness. But hey, let's ban a pet sitting service. Makes sense.

Much like red lights at empty intersections, this is a law to completely ignore.

I love to pet sit. Get to stay in a super nice house for a couple of days to a week. Usually, the host leaves me some food and a bottle of whiskey as payment

Not at all. I have never seen anyone do this and I would absolutely not condone anyone I know to do this.

So if I stop at a red light and then proceed when there are no visible vehicles in any direction, I'm being unreasonably dangerous?

Do you check for monsters under your bed at night, too?

The licensed kennel/boarding places must have had strong "lobby".

Just like laws against Uber and AirBnB, these only become safety issues when innovation impacts old money's pockets.

i can prove more monsters live under beds than people have been hurt by stopping at red lights at empty intersections

Just tell the authorities that the dog self-identifies as a human child.

This is fantastic! NYC residents LOVE Government. So, THIS sort of thing is just want they want: more government.

You can't honestly expect people to listen to that voice for any period of time.

So, just say that you have been hired to house sit, where there happens to be a dog or cat there.

This reeks of the type shite you would have when peckerhead lawmakers would enforce the banning of child lemonade stands unless there is some type of business license procured.
