If Jennifer Lawrence posed pre-Fappening, this wouldn't be happening.

The company now makes most of its money from licensing its ubiquitous brand and logo across the world — 40 percent of that business is in China even though the magazine is not available there — for bath products, fragrances, clothing, liquor and jewelry among other merchandise. Nudity in the magazine risks complaints from shoppers, and diminished distribution.

They're keeping the brand afloat for this. The best way in 2015 to do that is:

The latest redesign, 62 years later, is more pragmatic. The magazine had already made some content safe for work, Mr. Flanders said, in order to be allowed on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, vital sources of web traffic.

In August of last year, its website dispensed with nudity. As a result, Playboy executives said, the average age of its reader dropped from 47 to just over 30, and its web traffic jumped to about 16 million from about four million unique users per month.

A guy named "Flanders" runs Playboy.

You can't make this stuff up.

I was going to comment on how stupid this is but since most people outgrow playboy by the time they hit 30 and the younger generation of dudes is mostly pussywhipped this might sell to them so they can go show some feminist chick they want to frick how advanced they are.

wtf.....I'm sure this will increase subscriptions...

Assuming this means they won't be hidden behind the counter or covered in those plastic jackets anymore, yeah, it probably will. They used to set themselves apart from regular porn by getting big name celebrities to pose on a regular basis. With their subscription numbers in the toilet, they just can't do that anymore.

With the internet I don't know how they still sell that magazine

you can look at naked pictures of women for weeks and never see the same one twice

and if it's a celeb in playboy the same pics are usually a couple mouse clicks away for free

Playboy used to have excellent writing, sports predictions, style information, and interviews.

A few years ago they became as left-leaning as frick and it was irritating.

Nudes, no nudes, IDC. They aren't really in touch with popular culture anymore, so they are a non-starter.

Playboy is actually a GREAT magazine - probably the 2nd best writing/reporting/literature behind only The Atlantic.

It's too bad that it's turning into this PS tripe before our very eyes.

I kept my subscription for a long time b/c of this.
The last good interview I read was Jon Hamm's, but I cancelled shortly after that.

The writing went downhill.

At first this seemed like a crazy/stupid idea, but I actually think their reasoning is sound. Playboy always tried to position itself upmarket and as something a bit provocative. But even back in the day it was not hard core. There actually are good writers and interviews in the magazine. It has a strong brand, but basically no one goes there for nudity anymore b/c of ready availability from other sources, so they are going to focus on the remaining strengths. Cutting the nudity will allow it to be distributed more broadly, both here in the US and internationally.
