Witnesses said they expected him to get out when the others did but he went further out. They didn't try to help him because they said "it looked like he knew what he was doing"

Where the Natchez docks it is 40ft deep and drops off to 80+ feet

the currents and terrible undertows make it impossible to swim, which cost him his life

RIP

The currents in the river are pretty bad right now. The water level is still higher than it has ever been this time of year. I'm scared to go in accidentally, let alone on purpose.

with all the media hoopla in the last 3 weeks about how unsafe the lake is... this was bound to happen..

bottom line lakes and rivers aren't swimming pools...if you can't swim stay out..it's that simple...

my word though how can a society survive with out equal access to affordable swimming locations...

we provide housing, clothing, food, spending money, health insurance, phones.. why not throw in pools too

Seriously, this whole "swimming in the Mississippi River around NOLA" thing is new to me.

I pretty much figured if you were in the MS River in anything deeper than your knees, you were dead. I guess I am wrong.

Or around BR. Just thinking about it makes my heart race, and I am a good swimmer. No way, no way, no way!

I can swim pretty damn well, and I wouldn't even attempt swimming in the river if I was drunk. One look at it during the day, and you know it's playing for keeps

Thought the same thing walking along it when we brought the kids to the aquarium a couple of weeks ago.

FQ needed a good rain to wash away all the stink from the heat. Some parts of the FQ were unbearable from the beer and drinks poured in the gutters. Rains came and washed it all away.

Yes it did. I was on Bourbon a little over a week ago and it was the raunchiest I ever remember it smelling.

How far out from the shore can one reasonably swim before getting fricked?

We camp on the river south of BR a good bit and there is a sand bar that we put chairs in to sit and cool off. That current past knee depth gets crazy strong, plus all the debris that floats down to snag you.
