This is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is mentioned in the Hebrew Bible, and has a recorded history that dates back to 2000 BC. Second to the human suffering, the destruction of these sites is very very tough to watch, especially considering that they have survived a lot of conflict over thousands of years before Islam was even a thought.

Islamic State fighters have seized the northern part of the ancient World Heritage-listed city of Palmyra in Syria, a monitoring group has said.
Militants seized part of the town of Tadmur located on a strategic east-west route next to Palmyra on Saturday but had been pushed back from the ruins.
Palmyra contains architecture of one of the most important cultural centres of the ancient world, according to Unesco.
Now they have reached Palmyra, it is feared IS fighters may destroy it.
IS demolished the Unesco world heritage site of Hatra in Iraq in March, seeing it as a symbol of idolatry.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said a third of Palmyra had been taken after battles with government forces.
The site features a colonnaded street, major public buildings and funerary monuments.
It dates back to the 1st and 2nd Century, mixing Graeco-Roman techniques with local traditions and Persian influences.

If Obama wasn't such a puss he could have sent aid and air support to the moderate Syrian rebels who told us repeatedly they wanted American style democracy and then there wouldn't be ISIS or Assad.

Lol.
I'm certainly no fan of Assad but supporting various rebel groups history has shown is rife with unintended consequences.

It's as if he wants us to ignore the numerous times we have done that in history and had it blown up in our faces later on. What a moronic idea.

Just imagine if ISIS were to destroy a site that many Americans actually know about. Like Petra in Jordan (thank you Indiana Jones).

Biblically, I'm watching the dominos fall for the destruction of Demascus.

I know of a nice target range for our boys and girls in the Air Force and Navy to hone their skills on.
No ground troops needed. Just lots of air ordinance.
