I posted about this in the BA LHR flight thread and got down voted. But the new terminal was designed to be too small from the get go. (Currently have 42 gates, new terminal will start with 30 + these 6) and the terminal will go from 6 customs accessible gates to 2. They pulling a fast one on taxpayers

It is not about total number of gates, it is about maximum gate utilization. The new terminal design will allow for more efficient use.

Example: currently MSY serves 10 million pax with 42 gates. For comparison DAL serves 14 million pax with just 20 gates. Or AUS, 11 million pax with only 25 gates.

With continuous growth since Katrina. MSY has far surpassed Pre-Katrina numbers in all aspects and growth doesn't seem to be slowing down. A lot of people were worried that the new terminal was being built too small from the beginning.

The outgoing director was great. Hopefully whoever they bring in to replace him can continue to build on his success.

That's with 98% of the flights being SWA which has a 30 minute turnaround. The legacy carriers take much longer to turnaround and MSY is mostly legacy carriers as SWA only has ~40% market share.

The new facility is not being built with taxpayer dollars.

$700 million dollars in bonds and $21 million dollars in federal money = being paid for by tax payers.

All the legacy carriers fly narrow body aircraft into MSY and they do not have a "much Longer" turn time, mostly 30 minutes as well.

As for WN's market share at MSY, it is stronger than any other airline, probably close to all others combined.

Clearly you don't fly much. Our airport sucks compared to everywhere else, and it cost more in maintenance than the new one will.

Compared to everywhere else (like larger cities) or compared to similar size markets like Louisville, Memphis, Providence or Buffalo.

I don't think this think added concourse will address international issues either. Although MSY doesn't have a lot of international flights, but only 2 gates is kind of thin there also. There's already flights to 4 international destinations with seasonal increases and 2 more are coming online next year. Also AM has filed paperwork for flights from Mexico to MSY and beyond so that's probably already in the works for future flights. That's not even considering international charters which are relatively common.

Eta: that 42 gate count for the current terminal is kind of a misnomer as concourse A has been closed for a while. There's only like 36 useable gates now.

I want to tour the Panama Canal so I'll make it there one day, maybe a one or two day layover going somewhere else close.

Maybe Cartagena.

The talent there is astounding according to a friend who lives there.

Go on...

I do a lot of solo trips but it just doesn't feel like one I'd do on my own. No particular reason.

There is a strong possibility that WN does international out of the new airport.

It is absolutely stupid to expand the terminals at a land locked airport. MSY has two run ways with no place to put any new ones.
