Contractor is specifying 14 SEER. Ductwork is flex duck with fiberglass return and supply plenums. I believe he plans on installing 3 units (I need to clarify this). Mostly 1 story with 4 bedrooms at approx. 4100 / SF.

Thoughts on this set up?

Depends.

If this isn't your long-term house, that's probably decent.

That's kind of a low SEER nowadays, IMO.
Anything you pay for higher SEER is gonna pay for itself fairly quickly.

I'm not a fan of flex duct.

Foam?

Planning on being here for 20+ years.

What SEER did you choose?

Flex duct usually isn't the best idea. Metal duct is more expensive but can't be damaged by rodents chewing. They'll also withstand cleanings better if you get your ducts cleaned every so often.

13 SEER units manufactured after 1/1/15 are not allowed to be sold anymore in the South. Once the supply runs out, you will have to get a bootleg out of the North if you want 13 SEER

Is metal duct work significantly more expensive?

Hard pipe is also more efficient for moving air.

Surely the number of units and their SEER ratings were called out in the plans the architect drew up for you? Ask the contractor to bid you on a higher SEER rating and see if you have the extra cash now to change those three units. If you do...go for it. If you don't have that cash now or you don't want to spend it here just incase you have other changes (which you will have a lot more changes moving forward), then just go with the 14 SEER.

14 SEER is the minimum for new code. Have him price higher SEER models for you.

Sheet metal plenums at a minimum and if you can afford it go with sheet metal ductwork.

He's just gotta be careful.

Unfortunately, a lot of that stuff adds very little to the appraised value.

Go with 16 SEER. Higher cost but worth it.

There is nothing wrong with properly installed flex duct. A lot of metal duct I see leaks like crazy and is poorly insulated.
