Only if you intend to stay put for several years.

Rheem -

Kirk Manuel, with Home 360. Give them a call and request for him. Great guy.

I hope you don't need new ductwork. We bought a 5 ton unit (18 seer?) with new ducts through the whole house two years ago, was about $11k

just went thru this last month. Went with Trane XV18 condenser, TX80 furnace. 5 ton. All are variable speed. During night and early morning it runs at about 30% of capacity and ramps up to 60-70% during the day. As it runs longer, but slower, it gets very low humidity. Very quiet, Sometimes I have to check the thermostat to see if it is running.

How can you tell if you need new duct work or not? Also Corima, do you mind telling me how much yours was?

my duct work is only 7 years old, rigid metal. The a/c company said the ducts were fine for the new system. My coil had a leak, was builder grade, noisy and used the old freon. Probably could have patched, but just delaying the inevitable . It was 13K, Condenser, furnace, coils, thermostat . They also redid the return. It had been a metal box connecting the grill in a hall ceiling to the unit. Now is it a large flex return that makes a curve before going into the unit. Makes things much quieter. I would only recommend these variable speed units if you plan to be there for a long while, or if quiet and comfort are a priority. These keep to the set temperature within a half a degree. Very cool thermostat , Trane XL950

I just got quoted 6400 for a 5 ton Ruud installed. I've never heard of Ruud but that seems like a good price.

Ruud is owned by Rheem. Solid equipment. 6400 for cond. and air handler? Presumably 410a? If so, that's very good pricing as long as the contractors legit.

Edit: brew beat me to the punch
