Get picked up by my Uber driver and notice he's not that familiar with the streets here in BR, so I ask where he's from. (He looks about mid-20s.) Says he's from Cali originally, but that his family moved here about 15 yrs ago "for a change in lifestyle." I was like, "Oh really? In what way?" I was curious at this point...Then he was like "Yeah, you know Jimmy Swaggart? My family followed him here." And that was all he said.

I know I know CSB ...But really, in all my years of living in BR, knowing ppl from various schools, meeting lots of ppl in my LSU days etc, never in my life have I met a JS follower. It felt like a moment. FWIW, he was playing Drake in the car, so he's not completely out of touch.

Anyone else have a JS follower story?

You never at least knew anyone who went to Family Christian Academy?

Listening to Drake means you're not out of touch? On the contrary.

I mean, maybe like once or twice as a kid, but then they transferred before HS. Never met a real "follower" of that church before.

I was just surprised he wasnt listening to old timey gospel. Those ppl are typically wayyyyy traditional.

Depending on his tone, I could see this as bitterness or as some other negative emotion to the whole situation.

Sounds like his parents followed JS, not him.

You must have not been born or a baby in BR in the late 80's early 90's, if this is the first JS follower you have run into.

Back in the 80's, before Swag's Great Failure, when they were first building the Swag empire, it was very common to run into his followers. They were very brash back in those days - really in your face. They would preach outside of Tigerland bars at night and were daily speakers at Free Speech Alley on LSU's campus.

I used to work at Cock of the Walk, where Rue 61 is now located. I worked with quite a few Swag College students. They were mostly very nice, but a few were ridiculously judgemental. Swaggart and his family would often come in to be served. He was a shitty tipper.

Interesting. Yeah I mean, I've def been hearing their crazy stories from over the years about how judgy they were.... found it particularly odd that this guy's family came here for JS in the early 2000s. Does not compute. Very cultish IMO.

Yeah...that's what I am most surprised about. Like why come here all the way from Cali, after everything had hit the fan?? Very odd.
