I don't understand how people can be so irresponsible with their pets. I was outside this evening speaking with a neighbor and his young son and dog were running down our sidewalk playing. Another neighbor has a very large and aggressive sheep dog and was allowing his young daughter to walk it with the leash tied around her waist. The dog weighs more than she does. When the sheep dog saw my neighbors dog it drug the young girl across the street and tried to attack my friend's dog and son. I had to physically strike the sheep dog across the head and aggressively back it down to get it to stand down.

What does the dog owner do? Sends the kid back out on the street with the dog!

frick irresponsible pet owners.

Rant over

I am friends with a couple who adopted a pit. Had it for 7 years. They had a child last year. The pit snapped and latched on to the baby's face while the mother was holding her in her lap. Young child nearly lost an eye and has undergone quite a lot of facial surgery.

What about the irresponsible neighbor who didn't have his dog on a leash?

He had it on a leash but it was attached to his 9 year old daughter. The dog even snapped at her when she was trying to hold it back.

The guy obviously saw me clock his dog upside the head because he came outside less than a minute after but said nothing to me.

shite the neighbor and his wife are outside fighting now. I'm sure it's over what went down.

ETA - It's definitely over what went down. The mom is pointing to the empty field behind their place and talking about the dog.

punch? slap? karate chop? I'm just curious.

Did it go after you at all after you hit it?

Very hard open handed knock across the ear hole with my palm. The dog went from teeth out and growling at the kid and his dog to a confused state. I had to step between them and continue yelling at it though to get it backed down.

I have zero doubt the dog would have attacked had I not been there.

Should've put the dog in a sleeper hold and then pissed on him. That gives you permission to yell "HE SLEEP!"

Those sheep dogs are known to be aggressive....they even give some coyotes a hard time.

It's all good though because at the end of the day, all sheep dogs are trying to do is earn an honest, 9-5 living.

Two sheep dogs' attack on a Colorado mountain biker has prompted ranchers in the West to seek better ways to manage the large dogs that protect their herds against predators.

The American Sheep Industry Association has been working with state groups and federal agencies to address the problem as more people make their way into once-remote areas where sheep graze. With more hiking and biking trails being cut through public lands the federal government leases to ranchers, sheep herders and outdoors enthusiasts say it's a problem that has become more urgent.

The fluffy, white Great Pyrenees have long been used to guard sheep in mountainous areas of Europe. They can reach 100 pounds or more and are territorial, protective and fearless, according to the American Kennel Club. That makes them formidable guard dogs and fearsome attackers.
Two pulled Renee Legro off her mountain bike near Vail, Colo., in July 2008 and mauled her. Legro needed 60 stitches to close her wounds. The dogs' owner, Sam Robinson, was convicted of possession of a dangerous dog, fined and ordered to perform community service.

The owner just needs to train the dog. You can train any dog to be less aggressive and more obedient.

Only reason I knew about the breed was from personal experiences with them in high country CO. I had no clue how dangerous they were before. At first glance they look very docile. My perception changed when I had one try to bit the tire off my Jeep. They can grow to the size of a St. Bernard with the attitude of a pit.

Not a breed you want around young children.

Great Pyrenees come out the womb ready to protect and attack. These are not very trainable dogs.
