The best strategy for negotiating is being able to walk away from the deal if you don't get your number.
Even if you are terrible at face to face negotiating, this is the best practice. Unless you are being completely unreasonable, this always works well.

I negotiated a price via text message from one dealership. They gave me the price I wanted and I said I'll take it. Asked for a written offer and then I saw they were tacking on a $1500 dealer fee. The guy claimed it was a destination charge which was some BS. I sent him a picture of the total MSRP price from the window sticker which included the delivery destination charge in the total price. It's funny how it was included in the total price on the window but now it's separate. I walked away.
Had another dealership try to tack on some etching fee. I told him I didn't want it and they said it was not a option b/c it was already done. I then dropped my total price the exact cost of the etching. They didn't come down so I left. I got a call later from them but I changed my mind on the color and said no thanks.

They always try to pull a fast one on the paperwork.

Just remember you can't negotiate the finance. That's a bank thing. Take the 9.9%.

Anything less than 15% below MSRP and you're getting robbed
Blanket statements like this are silly. The mark up varies by make. Some luxury German imports have a mark up of 5-6%.... American cars have a much higher mark up.

Nor do I care. My point is don't say someone needs a new job based off no background info. I couldn't have dreamed of a better position at this point in my life.

What are some good ways to negotiate with a dealership on a used vehicle or on the value of my trade in? Also is it better or worse to negotiate through email/text?
Negotiate every step separately.
Start with the purcahse price of their vehicle. Then work on down payment, then work on trade in value, THEN discuss financing.
Their number one trick is to simply ask you "what kinda payments you looking for?" and then they can work the numbers however they like to make you believe you are getting a good deal. Kelley Blue Book will give you a very good idea of the trade in value of your vehicle.
Research, research, research before you even talk to a dealer.

How is the down payment a negotiating tactic?
Some of you people are fricking retarded.
Last NEW vehicle I purchased was 105k. I walked in. Looked at the sales manager, said I'll give you 105k out the door for this vehicle. He agreed. Everything else was just simple details. Think I got 50 or 52k on trade and put 20 or 25k down.
At no point is your down payment a negotiating tactic. If financing, they will get 1-2% of the total amount financed. Even on 50k that's a grand. And the number isn't negotiable into the price because you could pay it off in a few weeks and they'd get charged that amount back by the lender.
I have thankfully wisened a bit. I now don't drive anything worth more than about 10k. Not worth it. Maybe if I was single I might buy an AMG merc, but that would be more for me than the young pussy looking at it.

A) the down payment isnt' a tactic and that isn't what i said, what i said was negotiate a down payment before discussing payments. Not my fault you can't read
B) NO ONE on this board believes you have ever owned a $100 car let alone a $100K car.

I could find the ATV thread where we were discussing financed amounts and I posted a picture of the interest portion of the contract to prove a point.
That might make you feel bad though.

I could come up with a picture of me having sex with Melania while Ivanka licked my butthole from behind as Donald watched. Doesn't really prove much.
You've never bought a $100K car. FACT not opinion.
