Negoiating with car dealership
What are some good ways to negotiate with a dealership on a used vehicle or on the value of my trade in? Also is it better or worse to negotiate through email/text?

The best strategy for negotiating is being able to walk away from the deal if you don't get your number.

re: Negoiating with car dealership
I took a $56,995 car all the way down to $39,500 via email. Took all day of their bull shite to do it, but when I finally had an agreement, in writing, for the exact VIN, I had the wife come with me, I drove down and everything looked good, so she left. Five minutes later I get, "Oh, we forgot to add for this and that." I pulled out my phone, called my wife and asked her to turn around and come get me. And ended the call.

I thanked them, but said a deal's a deal, and anything different isn't the deal they agreed to, and I had it in writing from them, and would share it on social media. They quickly backed off and did the deal.

Just remember you can't negotiate the finance. That's a bank thing. Take the 9.9%.

re: Negoiating with car dealership
This happened to me. I had an email with the exact VIN for a car I was buying. I went to the dealership excited that all my bartering paid off and was ready to purchase until the nice salesman made an "honest mistake" and forgot to add in the dealership added items and the car got about 4k more expensive. I walked away.

You can always sell your used car outright and then deal with the dealership on the new one. No trade in problems. Then deal online with the web guy. They are easier to deal with.

Most dealerships have an "online sales" guy that handles negotiations over the phone for internet listed vehicles.

As far as going in to negotiate, the best thing you can do is know your price and walk away if you don't get it. Trust me- if they can sell if for that and still make profit, they won't allow you to leave. The longer you're in a dealership, the worse it is for you. Once you've been there 2-3 hours, you're far more likely to leave with a new vehicle. It's psychology and they are really good at wearing you down.

NADA guides for both. Know the values of the 2 vehicles, make an offer lower than the difference between trade in vales (they won't accept, you are fishing for counter). Make it in person if you are already positive this is the vehicle you want. Walk out when they refuse to deal. They will call you back.

Just make sure you have the info to know what is a good deal, and you are in great shape.

Eta: as seen above there is a ton of good info on the money board on this topic

Dodge Durango Citadel with the technology package and custom trim package. Top of the line. Timing is everything. End of 2014 year and they were moving in the 2015's. I knew cost, I knew every program they could apply to keep their profits and whittled it down to nothing.

Make it clear to them you don't want to talk about your trade-in until you have agreed on the price of the vehicle you're buying. They are separate transactions. If you let them work on them together, that is when you lose leverage and they start moving money around in their favor.

re: Negoiating with car dealership
I bought a new truck last December. I watched prices at various dealerships via cargurus.com. Then with 2wks left in the month, I began contacting various dealership to negotiate. I told them I would be buying a vehicle before the end of the month.

Never found any good deals locally in South MS/AL/LA so I ended up flying to Little Rock on Dec 26th to buy a GMC 2500 from Everett GMC. Easiest car buying experience I've ever had and well worth the $300 plane ticket. I was home by 7 that night. Negotiated all via email.

Best satisfaction was when a sales guy in Hammond called me back to give me a better offer while I was in Little Rock. I told him what I was about to pay and he said he couldn't touch that price. Everett is pure volume if you're interested in a GMC.
