So I'm trying to play a little more each year and I'm still struggling with some mechanics and habits that I can't seem to break. First of all, is not having a full back swing pretty common among golfers? I'm limiting my range big time by not having a full 100% back swing, and I'm usually closer to 80%. I can make decent contact at times but if I try a full swing, something goes wrong and I go full retard on contact. Also, I feel like my irons are short on me, but I'm honestly not sure. I'm about 6'1" using my dads old Cobra II irons and I feel slumped over a good bit and it forces me to top the ball often. What tips or advice do yall have for me to address these issues? I play maybe 10-15 times a year the last couple and have never had a lesson. Should I start there? Thanks

I have major swing issues, I can't correct them, and I can't afford lessons. But what you should try to do, is enjoy playing regardless of how bad you might play.

Short backswing is fine. It's worse to take the club too far back in your backswing than to shorten it. The main this is to accelerate the club through contact. A short backswing with good acceleration though the ball can make for solid shots.

Graham McDowell says he never swings 100% on any swing with a 7 iron through his wedges.

I used to hate playing because I'm not good, but I have since seen the light and just enjoy it for those random great shots or puts I make. I would just like to address a few issues and knock some strokes off my game. I probably shoot upper 90s right now if I'm lucky.

Maybe this is my problem. I know momentum in your hips gives you distance but I just can't seem to ever get a really good piece of it off my irons.

that's a huge turning point for a lot of people, once you accept the fact that you're not a natural and/or you just don't have the time and $ to dedicate to becoming your typical OT golfer, and just relax and play the game for personal enjoyment, very much a mental game, and coming to that acceptance usually improves your game a little

Oh it definitely has. Frustration seems to be a golf game killer. I still get frustrated but I just laugh it off now, instead of throwing my club.

I also think too many people get trapped in to playing Nitro golf. Why try to hit the 168 yard 7 iron? Instead of swinging all out and hitting it thin, or a big duck hook, why not take the smooth 6 or 5 iron and hit a decent shot that gives you a good chance at par or better? Swing under control, make solid contact with the ball and avoid the double and triple bogeys.

Remember, don't swing slow, just make a controlled swing that accelerates the club.

absolutely, you have to forget the last shot and move on, forgot to mention, if you like your clubs but think they are too short, go to a golf shop and have an instructor take a look at them and your swing, depending on where you go, it's not real expensive to have them reshafted

I have started to play golf more seriously, meaning to try to actively get better, but focus on the concentration aspects of the game. So I try to not let bad shots mess with my game.

Read THIS about four or five times, take notes, go to the range and practice what you've read.

Still the best book ever on the golf swing.

Go see a club pro to measure you to see if you should put some new shafts on your clubs.

I suck at golf but am looking to play more and improve. I just started using the rotaryswing site. I guess time will tell if it helps. They've started by putting me in a totally different posture. Feels better so far.

$150ish gets you access to all their videos for a year and 24 swing reviews. Seems like a pretty good value. Give it a look.

You and I are in the same boat friend. I want to accomplish the same thing. I'll hit alot of good/decent shots, but the bad ones far outweigh the good. And kill my rounds...

I got to this point a long time ago. I really really love being out on the course, and hacking it away, and hanging out with a few buddies. Nothing beats that really. I would juts love to make it a little competitive.
