Need OT Mechanics help
Posted by mandevilletiger34 on 8/23/17 at 3:59 pm00
Have an 07 Chevy Suburban paid off with 140k miles on it. Has been a great car with very few problems if any.
It overheated yesterday and blew a head gasket. Now I'm looking at 3k to repair it.
Never had this happen before...is it worth getting fixed or will this be a chronic problem from here on out?
Was hoping to get 200k out of it.

Sorry, our resident mechanic MJ2 is still locked up over probation violation and domestic violence with strangulation

Gasket failure happens, and at 140k miles it's not surprising. But if it repaired properly, it should be fine for a long time.

The repairs will certainly cost less than a new one. You can drop a freshly rebuilt motor in there for less than $3000 though. I have an 08 GMC Sierra, it does burn a little oil, at 4,000 miles after an oil change I have to add about 1/2 a quart to make it to 5,000.

$3k seems high for a head gasket.

Craigslist mechanic on the northshore with 30 years of experience. I bet he is substantially cheaper.

You can def get 200K out of it but I would be wary of the lifters. Have you noticed any uptick in engine noise? Stayed on schedule with oil changes?

Always maintained properly and never had any issues. Pull a camper with it and it has been a great car. Just hate sinking money in when not prepared

If this has those hydraulic lifters with the variable cylinder shite RUN away from that car. My '09 started with that right around 120k and it was a chronic issue that resulted in multiple repairs before I finally gave the thing away. If it starts ticking and burning oil that is your first clue. BTW, read the horror stories on line and then ask a GM rep about it. They are absolutely terrified of getting pushed into a recall or class action lawsuit over that POS engine.

It's about on par for shop prices with just about anything else. To change the head gaskets the right way, they're going to re machine the cylinder head and engine block to ensure a flush fit. It might be a 3k repair, but if you're willing to drop an extra grand and replace water pump and other small parts at the same time it's damn near a new engine at that point.

First of all..
You cant expect anyone to help you if youre going to start off lying.
Par for course.
You'll never get anyone in this low-bar State to do the job right. In all the mechanics shops Ive ever been in Ive never seen one ape with a torque wrench in their hand.
