I worked in Iraq. It's pretty secure and as long as you aren't a pussy you'll be fine. Just know there's always a chance shite could get real bad wherever you are but that's less likely than shite getting bad for you in New Orleans

Find out which PMC outfit is making your compound secure.

I worked extensively in the region on the pmc side and gave it up a couple years ago.

My advice to you in the current climate in the area would be to look stateside. Texas and Louisiana are booming with giant LNG projects right now. I am working in my field of educatiion of engineering/construction now and haven't looked back.

Be sure to thank a veteran for your job. Maybe even donate to them.

Subtle brag on having something to live for.

Good for you, we're all very impressed.

I worked in iraq, albeit it was 2004-05. It depends on many factors. Go in knowing you will not make as much as promised, and there's always the possibility of dying, but no more so than on the streets of major American cities. Depends on who you work for, who is securing the compound, type of work you're doing and etc. A 28/28 schedule won't get you an income tax break for working outside the country, so don't let them try to fool you on that tidbit either.

Yes, but it was quite a while back and things were better then.

To be honest it varies greatly from place to place. There are some parts of the country I would return to others not so much. I work in Saudi now and it is very different.

FYI there are several valid reasons the pay is so exceptional in Iraq right now, and getting your head cut off is a valid concern. while not likely it is certainly possible. Iraq is so dysfunctional right now just a garden variety mugging/murder would be my biggest concern.

There are some very bad boys based out of the North right now and I honestly would not even consider anything in that area.

Also most importantly Do not assume any area is ever secure, it can cost you dearly.

I first read this as "by Al Jazeera" and I thought "I don't think it's so bad even the media is cutting heads off"

If it's in Kurdistan, you'll be fine. That area is about as safe as any other major oil region.

Outside of there, I'd have to think long and hard.
