Need A New Vacuum Cleaner... Why Not A Shop Vac?
Posted by SirSaintly on 10/19/15 at 2:03 pm20
My Oreck finally bit the dust after about about 15 yrs, so in the market for a new vacuum. I have about 90% Hardwood in my house, 5% tile and 5% Berber carpet.
I was at the independent vacuum store looking at Miele, Sebo etc when the salesman said something like the only thing stronger than this is a shop vac. Got me to thinking, so I left without purchasing just yet.
Why couldn't I use a little 4-5 gal shop vac instead of a residential in home vacuum? They make Hepa filters for them, it would be a smaller one i'd dedicate solely to in home vacuuming?
Googled and apparently I can even buy a beater head attachment for a shop vac as I've seen several posts about people doing this. So for about $100-$125 all in (vac, Hepa Filter, beater head attachment, extension cord) I've got a superior vacuum. One guy online said he even keeps a gallon of water in it to trap dust.
Vs $500+ for the Miele, Sebo I almost bought.
Is this a crazy idea? Any reason why a Miele or more conventional vacuum would be better? I'm not opposed to spending $500+, but if I can get just as good a vacuum, or better, for $150, why not?

my shopvac worked well in the house but Pet hair would ultimately clog the intake. It was a SOB getting it cleaned out.

no brushes on a shop vac, but if you dont need them, why would you spend that much on a vacuum

Commercial Oreck XL for the win. I bought one on Amazon for 174.99

This is absolutely the correct answer. My buddy sold me a commercial Oreck hotel maid model vacuum twenty five (25!) years ago and it still works as good as the day I got it. Realizing that I vacuum as much in a year as a hotel maid does in a few days this isn't so surprising. It has a really long heavy duty cord, big motor and large bag.
Granted, it is loud as hell (probably the heavy duty motor) but the trade off is worth it.

I use a shop vac for the dog hair and a regular vac for after that

The only good value in the market is Hoover. Their stuff is reasonably priced and works well. Other offerings under $200 tend not to match what Hoover offers in the price range.
In higher price ranges ($500 and up let's say) it's hard to buy a truly bad vacuum IMO they're just all expensive as shite.
ETA: To answer your question about why you wouldn't just use a Shop Vac, the main reason in this case would probably come down to how much you do or do not prefer an upright.

If I was just messing with hardwood (and if I still had stairs to mess with) I would probably go with the Dyson Animal Slim Cordless. The janitor service where I work has these for the stairs and concrete hallways. They are pretty awesome.

The general consensus online, with independent vacuum dealers etc is that Dyson sucks, and NOT in the way you want them to. Vacuum repairman basically said Dyson is all marketing and that their expensive, pieces of junk.
So I'm not getting a Dyson.
If the shop vac idea is stupid (and it very well could be), I think I'm going Miele. Can't beat the reviews on those.
BTW, I'm in the market for a canister vac that uses bags (if not going with Shop Vac, although they do sell bags for them too) as everywhere I've read, canister, bagged vacs are better vacuum's by far than uprights or bagless.
If I'm spending over $500 for the Miele it's b/c I don't anticipate living in my current house forever, so I want something that is capable of cleaning carpets.

The beater brush head I'd buy separately for $50 from the vacuum place near me could be attached to the extension pieces on the shop vac, therefore i'd have brushes.

are they powered or do they run off the suction? there is a difference

Why would you spend so much on a vacuum for wood floors? For the money, I'd get a roomba and a cheap vac to use occasionally to deep clean. I just got this one and it has been great for a cheap vac. Roomba does the hard work for me

eta: just saw this
but i still wouldn't pay that much for a vacuum on the possibility that one day you would maybe have lots of carpet. to each his own i guess. fwiw the cheap one i linked sucks like a beast and has great reviews.

Atrix backpack vacuum for $174. Why drag around a canister? After I rip out what little carpet is left in my house and I refinish the original oak floor I'm not going to scuff them up with a Miele or Riccar.

Lux by Aerus (sold by sales person)...canisters run $1300-$2000. They are lifetime vacuum cleaners and clean better than just about anything out there.
