Safe to say this came as a shock to me. Do I come clean, admit I forgot, and beg for mercy? Or do I play it off like I had something planned for later this evening?

How will your sidechick feel about you bailing on her tonight? I bet she knew today was your anniversary.

This. Continue to play it completely aloof, and then surprise her after work big time.

Seven years. The only thing I have going to for me it the fact it doesn't end in five or zero.

Did your wife wish you a happy anniversary yet? Clearly no... It's 2016. Demand equal treatment for both men and women. It's just as much her fault as it is yours and she should be held equally accountable. Now go pee in her bathroom

Screw that noise. Go all in. Convince your wife that it is absolutely not your anniversary. I don't care if she pulls out copies of the invite with the date on them. Lie to her face with conviction and tell her they are wrong. Never back down, never surrender. Then convince her that her mother is going senile. Put her in a home. WIN....WIN!

I never understand why this is so panic-worthy.

Make a reservation for somewhere nice. Unless you live in a town with one nice place this shouldn't be hard.

Leave work and go shopping if you can. If not, order something nice and tell her it took too long to ship and man, did you let Nordstrom/whoever have a piece of your mind. Overnight/2 day it so she doesn't have long to wait.

Go to Whole Foods or something and get some nice flowers to bring home.

True

Play it off and surprise her this evening. And you owe your MIL big time for this. Imagine the disaster if she wouldn't have texted you.
