On behalf of the black community, you have our permission to fly the Texas flag on the front of your '85 Ford Ranger.

He needs the Mexican community's blessing, not the black community's. This isn't always about you.

He was actually from Tennessee; brought his family to Texas at the promise of land for volunteering. Rumor in our family is that the land that the current Texas state capitol sits on was promised to Jesse Bowman.

My grandfather did all the genealogy; took awhile to provide the proof via birth certs and marriage licenses.

This can be frustrating.

I have a great (x whatever) grandfather who fought at Kings Mountain and Cowpens in the American Revolution, but it is hard as crap to find the proper documentation that is acceptable for the historical societies.

BOWMAN, JESSE (1785–1836). Jesse Bowman, Alamo defender, was born in Tennessee in 1785. By 1811 he was in Illinois, where he made his living as a trapper and hunter. His son Joseph was born in Illinois. Bowman, his wife, and three children became the first known settlers of Camden, Ouachita County, Arkansas, in 1824. Four years later they moved to Hempstead, Arkansas. In the 1830s Bowman, his son, and his brother and nephews immigrated to Texas and received land in Red River County. Bowman and his son served in the Texas army during the Texas Revolution. As a member of the Alamo garrison, Bowman died in the battle of the Alamo on March 6, 1836.

JESSE was a good bowler, and a good man. He was one of us. He was a man who loved the outdoors... and bowling, and as a surfer he explored the beaches of Southern California, from La Jolla to Leo Carrillo and... up to... Pismo. He died, like so many young men of his generation, he died before his time. In your wisdom, Lord, you took him, as you took so many bright flowering young men at Khe Sanh, at Langdok, at Hill 364. These young men gave their lives. And so would JESSE. JESSE, who loved bowling. And so, JESSE B. BOWMAN, in accordance with what we think your dying wishes might well have been, we commit your final mortal remains to the bosom of the Pacific Ocean, which you loved so well. Good night, sweet prince.
