So my friend from my last assignment told me today that upon arriving at his new base, it was time for his annual check up/screenings/immunizations.

He went to the base hospital, took care of it, and left.

Few days later he gets a call asking if he could please come back in.

His primary care physician sits him down and tells him that he's tested positive for HIV.

They sent him to run a secondary test to confirm.

A week later they call him and tell him that due to a lab error, the first test result was a false positive.

It's pretty funny now but can you imagine thinking for a week that you "might" have HIV???

Also, I made a few memes poking fun at him.

I know....csb

I always go speak to the doctor, face to face, with these type of results.

No way in hell, am I getting a phone call and telling me I have some shite.

ETA : Even the intern girls at the LSU Health Center, would just throw me the paperwork when I would go get screened in college. Almost like I was an infectious miscreant. frickers.

Yes, because thinking you have a disease(that can still technically kill you) is fricking hilarious.

I'm sure it's up there with having blisters form on the tip of your penis and they disappear after a couple of weeks and never see them again.

I'm a married male. He's a single male who uses Tinder. Funny this is that he said he'd learned his lesson and deleted the app lol

Even if you test positive your chances of having HIV are low...funny how stats work.

Obviously it wasn't very funny for him at the moment. And he was furious shortly thereafter-rightfully so. But it's a military doctor. We can't do shite about it. Now that he's okay, we might as well laugh about it.

At least we know that given the extremely low base-rate of HIV, false positives are far more likely than false negatives.

as someone else said - a false positive isnt necessarily an error.

Yeah the probability of testing positive and actually being positive is far lower than people realize. Base-rates and conditional probability are often counter-intuitive.

The first test he had done is very sensitive and is thus almost always positive for people who have HIV. A trade off for being so sensitive is that it sometimes gives false positives.

Since HIV isn't super common, there are often as many or more false positives as true positives. That's why a second test that gives very few false positives is used to confirm the diagnosis.

When I was in the AF I had a similar experience except it was donating blood. I spent about two weeks under a similar worry.

The bad part for me was the doc wanted a list of all partners for the last 18 months and one of the recent past partners was his nurse standing in the room. She was not happy thinking I gave her a std.

Ended up a false positive as well.

I knew a guy in college that this supposedly happened to. Told he had HIV, then had to tell his family. I don't remember everything, but I do recall him saying his parents had him listing out all his sexual partners to call and inform them. Said it was quite awkward saying everyone he fooled around with while his grandma was present or some shite. All to find out shortly after that it was a false positive

My dad used to donate blood all of the time until he got a false positive for Hep C and had to pay a bunch of money that insurance wouldn't cover for tests that ultimately said he was clean. He's been jaded since.
