Moving to the Denver area. Suggestions needed

The wife (no pics) and I are going to be moving to the Denver area in about 6 months. We are looking for a nice area to live on the west side of Denver. Cost of living up there is pretty high but we are trying to find housing, or build a home in the area of $250-$300k.
Does anyone know the area well enough to advise on some good places to consider for a couple in their late 20's with no kids.

Whatever is the closest distance to a dispensary and a Taco Bell.

Good luck with that. You could try parts of lakewood, arvada or wheatridge.
But you won't get too much on the west side for $250-300k. those are mostly fixer uppers these days. Or have a major downside. My friend bought a 2:1 on a busy street for $220k in lakewood. No basement, no garage.

We are both very active. We like to hike, fish, kayak, and ski. That's why I was leaning towards the west side. Neither of us mind a drive to work under an hour.
Is there a better area around Denver to have all of that within a reasonable drive?

Your best chance would be Wheat Ridge or Arvada. If you're cool with suburbs, Westminster our Broomfield. But 250-300 is low in any of those areas. You might consider Lakewood, though it can be a bit sketchy for some. I came there from Nola, so I thought any hood around Denver was quaint. But my opinion is skewed in that regard.
Really, there isn't any rough neighborhoods, so I recommend trying to rent, although that is incredibly tough as well. Of course, I also have an American Staffordshire, and they're illegal in most areas around Denver, except the West side.

Yea I knew nothing of the area until I checked that out. Anyone got $1 million I can have?
What about building a little further out from the burbs? Or should I just concede the fact that I'm gonna be poor up there?

Stapleton is a cookie cutter neighborhood but safe and in your price range. 10 min from downtown.
If you have no kids consider living in an apartment uptown or westside downtown around the i25 corridor for a while until you figure out what you really want.

Get on the internet and start looking. Look in all the surrounding areas. And then look some more. Pretty soon, you'll get an idea of what your money will buy.
North is good, too. Have you been here and looked around? You should. You are going to have to fight for a house. You need to know the areas because you won't have time thinking about it. You find a house and you bid on it, today.
If you can go further north, Fort Collins might fit your style. 300k will get you a decent house.

We are strongly considering doing this for about six months while we figure out the area and where we want to end up. only issue is that we have a 1yo black lab that is obviously pretty active but well behaved so we need some space nearby to stretch her legs.
Any idea what some good places are in that area?

Really nice college town. Depending on where in Denver you work, you should check out Ft. Collins.

Ft Collins is a top 5 place to live. And far less liberal douchebaggery than Boulder and Denver.

Colorado luvs dogs. And the rabies shot is good for two years.

Be real careful choosing an area in Lakewood. Used to be a great area but that's no longer the case.
Dad lives there. As you said though compared to NOLA it isn't a big deal, but if I'm the OP I stay away.

This. And you'll get a sense of the housing market. It's crazy. Get your credit in order.
