Shell of its former self. I know someone who bought a lot back in 2003, and sold a few years later. That area never materialized into what it was originally planned to be and home prices are on the downswing.
ETA: not to mention it's far away from I 12 and nowhere near BR.

Small city
Nice neighborhood
20 min from BR
Low crime area
River nearby
5 min from I-12
Great Golf
Less traffic than Ascension or DS

I'll keep it short and sweet. Buy in Area 5. Send your kid to the closest catholic school. Yes, it's a more expensive move than Praireville or Zachary, but you won't have to drive into and out of BR everyday.

If you work in Baton Rouge live in Baton Rouge. Send the kids to public school.

You're joking, right? Right?

So, did the Aubie come back or did we scare him off.
As for the future LSU employee, if he *really* likes cycling you could probably find a quiet place on River Road heading down towards Sunshine. Or a house over there where Nicholson and Brightside meet up.

Lower grade-point requirement for sports, clubs means more opportunities to learn
This should solve a lot of problems!

Any advice on neighborhoods with good schools
Just sat down for a little OT entertainment and this thread did not dissapoint. There are a number of good neighborhoods in BR...just do your research. We live in SE EBR because of the large lots with mature trees so you might want to give that area a look (e.g., Lake at White Oak, The Woods).
Same goes for schools. The OT is a popular place to bash public schools but we have put six kids through the system (youngest just graduated from BRMHS). All of our kids had great opportunities for college because of their public education. EBRPSS has an excellent gifted/tallented/magnet program that gives students and parents many options. Do your research and don't let the haters jade your opinion. Good luck.

Well, to be perfectly fair to EBR, I do know of a few decent middle schools that aren't in the magnet system (though they might have a magnet component).
Glasgow, Woodlawn, and Southeast are all decent options (but then this is a good ways off for your seven year old). High schools are a bit murky, but many of them have decent staffs; the issue is more with having to work with traditionally low-scoring students because magnet schools (and private/parochial) tend to steal a lot of the better ones.

Best neighborhoods (just in general), in my opinion would be the Garden District, Mid City (Capital Heights, Bernhard Terrace, Old Goodwood, 100 Oaks, ect
These are always popular suggestions on the OT, but I don't see the appeal. I get the oak trees and proximity to LSU. But many of those houses have the look, feel, and smell of stepping into the 1970's. Plus the hood is way too close for comfort.
Like, would you move your family into this $319K house in Capital Heights?

Come at me down voters. Tell me what I'm missing.

What's your house-buying budget? Where will you (and/or the wife) be working?

Not that one, but I've seen many in that neighborhood that I would be more than happy to live in.

For Ascension Parish, Prarieville will be most convenient for BR and will give you the most accessibility to stores and restaurants. The drawbacks are generally smaller lot, higher prices, tons of traffic in town, and houses that all look the same. Dutchtown is also the best public high school in the Parish (except for music (STA), Robotics (EA), and Sports medicine (STA)).
Gonzales has slightly worse public schools (EA is a little rougher than Dutchtown), more rental property, lower prices, more varied house plans, lower traffic within town (except on Highway 30) and similar levels of convenience while being farther from Baton Rouge and closer to plants in Geismar.
St. Amant is not as great of a school as Dutchtown (except in Sports Medicine and music) but better than East Ascension (except in robotics). Here you get the least amount of traffic in town, the least options for grocery stores and restaurants, and most varied house plans. St. Amant is least convenient for Baton Rouge, but is still ok for getting to Geismar and much better for commuting to the River Parishes or Donaldsonville. It is also more convenient for getting to restaurants and bars along the Amite. The issue is inconsistent neighborhoods (mansion next door to a meth trailer, next door to a pasture, next door to a gas station, next door to another mansion, ect), and distance getting places. Both of those can be assuaged by going to the neighborhood of Galvez, which lies between Prarieville and St. Amant, but sends their kids to St. Amant. For more consistent neighbors and an "upper class" living, there's Pelican Point for golf and the Diversion Canal for boating.
This is extremely accurate. Well done
