So, a friend of mine just dumped his chick (he was nuts for ending it). They were together for a year, it seemed to be a decent relationship, but he always talked about how her family was crazy and evil.

You have to ask yourself one simple question.
Is harming your friendship with this guy, potentially even losing the friendship, worth it to get this girl?

I've never understood why an ex is off limits to friends. What does it matter to your friend? They are no longer together. Though I've been told recently I lack empathy and don't understand relationships or human interaction as well as I should.
