A gang of jewellery thieves who staged a heist on a safety deposit firm in Hatton Garden tunnelled through walls before abseiling down a lift shaft, according to reports.
The gang plundered a massive haul of jewels and cash in the raid, believed to be worth tens of millions.
They used heavy cutting equipment to get through an 18in security door and gain access to the vault at the Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd over the Bank Holiday weekend.
The gang of professional thieves then drilled into hundreds of secure boxes left there over Easter by other jewellers, according to reports

An anonymous source told The Sun: “The thieves tunnelled their way through one wall and then through another into the building’s lift shaft.
“They used ropes to abseil down the shaft to the basement and smashed their way into the vault.”
It is claimed at least 300 boxes were raided in what could be Britain’s biggest heist, potentially surpassing the £53million stolen in 2006 from a Securitas depot in Tonbridge, Kent.

How did they have time to drill into hundreds of safe deposit boxes? And using heavy cutting tools to get through thick walls? And the alarm even went off! Somebody got some 'splaining to do.

That's going to be hard for them to unload without calling attention to themselves.

One of them will tell his wife/GF, get into an argument with her, then she'll dime the whole crew out.

You act like they were drunk one afternoon and robbed a liquor store.
These guys know what they're doing.

It's crazy that you could go to jail for longer by using a handgun to rob a conscience store for a couple hundred bucks. If you are gonna steal, go big.

I've never known the word 'abseil'. Cool.

It's what the British do when they go rappelling.

What tool cuts through an 18 inch thick metal door? And how did that get into the vault? That part is noticeably absent.

Repell down the shaft with it tied some way repelling with you. It could have been a relatively small saw with a metal cutting blade. They had a ton of time once they got in there so I'm sure if it took 2 hrs to cut through it that was ok
