Mounting TV above the fireplace

I understand this is a convenient place to put it, but it is so damn uncomfortable having to look up to watch TV. Looking at new houses it seems this is pretty much standard from cookie cutters on up to custom homes.

Hurts my neck. Why wouldn't you want a nice piece of art there instead?

Push your sofa back.
With that said, I hate a tv over the mantle

I hate it. And everyone is doing it.

I have a mantel mount on mine. They are expensive but it really, really helps as it drops the TV as much as 18" when you want to view it at a lower angle.

Fireplace needs to be in the smoking room.
TV in TV room.
TV in TV room.

I don't think it's trashy, I just think it's a shame how seemingly every home is now designed like that. They design the living rooms so you basically have no choice but to mount it there.
I definitely think it's something that is going to date houses of this vintage.

That's definitely the case with newer homes. Especially the cookie cutter ones.
I get not wanting to mount the TV over the mantle, but when they leave you no alternatives what can you do?

We put ours up there for a couple of days...it sucked.
Plus my wife is an architect and hates having a TV as the focal point of a room.
Also, if you actually use the fireplace, the heat is very bad for the TV.

Yea, I really don't like it that high myself. I get tired of looking up at it.

We have a family pic on our mantle. Tv is on separate piece of furniture in corner.

I thought about it, for about two seconds. Didnt want the TV as the focal point of the room, plus we actually use the fireplace out here for like 5 months out of the year

It's like sitting in the first row of a theater.
Have a fireplace, but the TV is on a stand/table at eye level of the sofas.

I live in a craftsman style house built in 1944. I have no idea what owners of this place did before flat panel TV's. Ours is above the fireplace out of necessity. The next (bigger) house hopefully will have more options.

True this. Just moved into a brand new house and the living room is designed where only spot for tv is over fireplace. There's really no other alternative without doing electrical revisions. You learn real quickly that a low back sofa has to be replaced. Now, have to buy living room furniture built to support your neck when you look up. Otherwise, it's not comfortable.
I think the ticket is a high back sofa where you can rest the back of your head directly on the cushion, and possibly have an option to recline. Otherwise, it's off to the bedroom to watch tv.

My buddy actually melted the bottom of his tv. Fireplace with no mantle.
