Why the Irish were looked down upon by the English:

When England was colonizing Ireland in the Middle Ages, they lived by English law while in Ireland. But the English considered Irish law to be barbaric so they abolished it. But when the king tried to implement English law among the natives, the English colonists refused to let this happen. According to them, only the English should get to live under English law. So for a long time, Irishmen was literally lawless.

----------------------/--------------------

Robert the Bruce was not very Scottish.

The guy who became king in Braveheart wasn't very Scottish. Though he was related to the Scottish king, his family was Norman and either his mother or grandmother was English. He also was a huge supporter of Edward I for most of his life.

------------------------/

The subservience of the kingdom of Of Scotland was actually a very controversial thing. English kings wanted overlord status but usually, Scottish kings just paid homage to the English kings for the lands they owned in english territory (just like the English kings did to the French). But John Baleel (sp) actually paid homage to Edward I for all of Scotland (the last Scottish king before Robert the Bruce)

------------------------------

Jewish expulsion was a money making venture more than anything else in the Middle Ages. Jewish men were able to charge interest which Christian men were forbidden.

When too many nobles owed money to Jewish moneylenders and a man in power needed money, it was customary to banish the Jews for the nobles to agree to higher taxes.

Cleopatra lived closer to the building of Pizza Hut than the pyramids.

There was more time between the Stegosaurus and the Tyrannosaurus Rex than between Tyrannosaurus Rex and you.

Harvard University was founded before there was even calculus.

Oxford University is older than the Aztecs!

There are 3 or 5 books in the Harvard library bound in human flesh. It used to be seen as a nice memento to have things made out of loved ones.

I'm related to William Wallace through his mother, fwiw. Not super interesting, nor is it related to Bobby Bruce. But the Braveheart reference was enough for me to jump in.

I read something similar a few years ago...She lived closer to the landing on the Moon than the building of the pyramids. That blew my mind.

There is a game mechanic in Crusader Kings II that emulates this exact thing.

People lose track of things through a historical lens - but, I can illustrate with a much shorter period, at least for folks who are mid-40s and older - We're further removed from the U.S. Bicentennial celebration (1976) right now, then we were in 1976 from the start of World War II.

The siege of Masada.

The roman army was so intent on killing the Jews holed up in a fortress on a plateau, they built a massive dirt ramp up the side of a cliff just to find the Jews committed mass suicide.

Here's the ramp, still visible almost 2000 years later.

Thanks. I have read a few books on Scottish history because I am a nerd genealogist and my surname is from Arglyshire region.

My first paternal ancestor arrived here in 1651 aboard "The Unity" as an indentured servant along with two of his brothers. He fought with Leslie's army when Oliver Cromweld raged war in Scotland. Leslie's army fought for the crown and snatched defeat from the jaws of victory at The Battle of Dunbar after a host of Jacobite advisors persuaded him it to attack Cromwell's army who were trapped at Dunbar Castle awaiting ships to arrive to flee. The Jacobite meddlers, who had a lot of authority granted from the crown , convinced Leslie that God almighty would award him a smashing victory. What ensued was a reverse rout as the Scots stupidly deserted the high ground inland from the castle that refused an overland retreat of Cromwell's forces. They had them boxed in and outnumbered and the only available retreat was by sea.....much like Cornwallis at Yorktown.

But it had rained a lot the previous days. The Scots got bogged down in a muddy quagmire as they descended the high ground onto the plain below. Cromwell said only a miracle could save his forces and he received one. He hit them from both flanks with cannon fire and Calvary charges after their exhausting trek down the mountain and basically ripped Leslie's exhausted forces to shreds while outnumbered two to one. Carrying 100lbs+ of armor on ones back through a quagmire to a disorganized battle front when the opponent is lying in wait tends to level the odds. There were 4000 Scots who died that day and over 8000 taken prisoner after surrender. My ancestor was one of them.

All 8000 were sentenced to serve as indentured servants in overseas British colonies. Many were sent to the West Indies but my ancestor was sent to America via Philadelphia. He and 149 other Scots including his two brothers voyaged across the ocean on the "Unity." This is probably boring to most but as a history lover and genealogist, it is cool to be able to identify a single moment or event that determined why an ancestor came to America.
