JACKSON, MS - A public school in Mississippi will soon be stripped of its Confederate namesake and named after another president who parents, students and teachers say is more fitting for the school, Barack Obama.

quote:

According to a report from the Clarion Ledger, the decision to change the name of Davis Magnet IB, a predominantly black school, comes after a vote by school stakeholders on Oct. 5. School President Janelle Jefferson announced the new name, Barack Obama Magnet IB, at the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” she told the board.

A demographic breakdown of Davis Magnet’s enrollment for the 2017 school lists 98 percent of the school’s students as black.

Overall, JPS’ enrollment is 97 percent black.

I think it is a great honor. It pays respecks to a man that truly helped a demographic when it needed it the most.

People are so f’ing dumb

What will this change in the community?
What will this change in the school system?

Nothing

There are more important things that the school systems in MS need to concentrate on

The JPS school system is failing and is about to be taken over by the State. A comparable school system in the state that is doing well has 180 employees in the Administration Department. JPS has over 900. They have other things to worry about. But they're spending time and money changing the names on buildings.

BTW: the school board is elected. Of course.

Bc we already know "diverse" doesn't actually mean diverse. It is just a euphemism for "anything but whites up in here."

Black school in Jackson wanting to name it after Obama. I don't see the problem.

If it's the same school I'm thinking of, it is perennially ranked as the one of the best in the state.

They practically still are slaves, such is the oppression they face. Any liberal could explain it better than I.

And keeping it as Jeff Davis will help it?

Who gives a shite what they want to name it? I'm sure it's not a white school.

It's not bothering me. If it motivates them to do better, then good for them. I could care less.

Her "diversity" comment notwithstanding, she has a point. I bet Jefferson Davis would be pissed that his name is on a school with 97% black enrollment.
