Minecraft Videos and Their Appeal to Kids

This comes from the "I wish I was born in the 80's" thread.
I, too, have a kid who watches Minecraft (and other video game) videos, ALL the fricking time. And I don't consider myself an out of touch person. I get it. People watch videos about what they are interested in. This isn't a hard concept to understand.
What is hard to understand, however, is how they can be interested in them. I'm talking about the ones with the people overreacting and literally screaming over every little thing that happens in the game. Here are my questions:
How can anyone watch this shite? Do you like them? Why?
If the videos were just people showing you how to play the game, would you still watch? Do the "narrators" add anything worth watching?
And lastly, the big question... if these videos annoy the frick out of everyone in your house, how do you banish them? I know I can make the electronics disappear in one fell swoop, and I've done it before. I'm interested in more subtle solutions. Anyone have success with this?

I am, unfortunately, with you.

School starting was the excuse to banish the tablet. He only gets it on the weekends now. He can watch those stupid arse videos in his room on his TV (where we can't hear them), or actually play Minecraft on the xbox if he had a good day at school.
But so far this seems to be working. He's actually riding his bike, and playing outside, and...you know...talking to his parents and sister.

As a professional armchair psychologist and practicing semi-involved parent, I have to conclude that your child more than likely dives into fantasy land to escape his shitty family.
To ban this sort of activity in my household, we employed something similar to the boo box from the highly rated film "Hook". It's had mixed results.

I've played the game. I was actually an early adopter on Minecraft. So I get what is unusual and not about the game.
I was walking by, and glanced over my kid's shoulder while he was watching one of these videos, and a skeleton got into a house. There were two British dudes and a retarded-sounding girl literally screaming in hysterics over this very routine in-game occurrence. This was about 30 seconds after the last thing they had JUST screamed about.

No, that's not my kid. That's ME.

I think I was the one to mention the Minecraft videos so I feel your pain. Headphones are your friend until this fad passes.

This thread makes me depressed.

My 10 year old Great-Nephew watches that. It's like he's hypnotized by it.
I've watched it with him just because I like spending time with him.
I've got him watching Wiley Coyote and the Roadrunner, but he'd rather watch other people play Minecraft.Pat and Jen.

My kids watch these videos. The blue haired British dude and some chick right?
I just don't get why they'd rather watch someone play the game than play it themselves. I mean, I went out and bought the fricking game for them and i don't think they've even played it.

My daughter likes to watch other kids playing with toys. I guess that's the new version of the Sears Wish Book.

Yes that's the crew!
What is weird to me is how these kids even discovered these videos.

The people who do those Minecraft videos are millionaires. It's insane.
Almost as insane as the porn chick who makes millions making videos of her hands unboxing Disney toys.
We live in a very strange world.
NO GET OFF MY PORCH!!!

I think more than anything my child has been able to watch the Minecraft videos and use it more of an educational thing. He's able to create things in the game that would probably take me forever to figure out. He knows which potions go to what to make certain things like portals, etc. all from watching videos. Sure the voices are annoying, but I'm able to tune that out and just be there with him in the moment while he plays in his world. He goes to school and then comes home to do homework. After his homework, he goes outside to play and then about an hour before dinner time (roughly 6 PM), he comes in and will sit down and play minecraft or if I can get away from the other kids for some father/son time, we will play Call of Duty together until dinner time. He's got all the minecraft books that he enjoys trying to read and understand. It's all just a massive learning platform to him.

My kid does the same. I don't get it.
I've been keeping the tablet away from him more and more. I'll let him watch a little on the weekend and every now and then on the weekday.
My two are easily entertained with their toys and playing outside and all, but you give him that tablet and he'll watch that crap all day if you let him. I just don't get it. Why watch someone play with hot wheels when you can play them yourself? I get watching it to get ideas to do it yourself, but there aren't ideas coming from it. It's just more watching.

At first I didn't get why kids like doing this, but I freaking loved Nick Arcade as a kid...which is basically just watching other kids play arcade games.
The coolest part was where they had to play as part of a game. I'm not sure how this worked...

DanTDM used to be a staple in the house. Best punishment ever was to threaten to not allow him to watch DanTDM. Luckily he's sort of getting out of the DanTDM thing and is not obsessed with airplanes. DanTDM is replaced with Dogfights on youtube. The Dogfights videos are way more intereting
