Scruffy has a family friend who we've known for years who joined the reserves after running into behavior issues in college. He seemed to be doing really well.

He had re-enrolled in school and the reserves were, Scruffy is assuming, paying him to go to college.

He has since dropped out and has neglected his reserve duties for God knows how long now. As far as Scruffy knows, he was still accepting checks from them.

What sort of punishment is he looking at?

UCMJ court martial. If what you are saying is correct, he's AWOL.

Since the reserves aren't really military it won't matter, as a matter of fact it probably helps them more that he's not showing up, so promotion

Yea, that's what it seems like. Guessing he will have to repay what they gave him, but is there jail time involved in this also?

Scruffy should tell his friend to tell his unit he went AWOL to draw attention to leadership problems in the battalion. His family will get a free trip to the White House.

Depending on how long he's been AWOL he might end up with some time in the brig.

He's definitely going to have to pay back any money that he's received. And the govt will get their money back.

He will get UCMJ. May have to pay back the money but the worst thing would be probably an Other than honorable discharge which isn't the end of the world. So he'll be in debt and probably not able to get a decent job and won't be able to draw and good benefits with that discharge

He's not AWOL if he's not on orders. Usually, you don't show up, you don't get paid in the reserves. I'm not sure of the details of his tuition $ from the reserves, but he could end up owing some $ back and he could get kicked to the curb from the unit.

I assume article 86 for failure to report for duty.

It's the reserves, they probably haven't even noticed he's gone unless he was the guy that usually brought donuts and coffee.

Used to be a time you could just say you couldn't make drill cause it was your boyfriend's birthday. You'd still have to pay the money back but you'd be done with the service. Those days are gone and your buddy is fricked pretty hard.
