Mid-back fricked up after doing squats - anyone have this happen?
Posted by LSUTigersVCURams on 9/20/16 at 9:12 am24
I flew back coach from California on Sunday and was crammed into the seat in an awkward position. Then, yesterday I went to the gym to do some squats and as I was going into one I got an unusual pain in my mid-back that is still with me today. It is bad when I try to stand up very straight.
Anyone have this happen? Is it something that will go away, or am I fricked? Do I have the AIDS?

Stretch a bunch, maybe hit a foam roller, and do a bunch of good mornings.
I also find that static holds from a pull-up bar really help me inbetween squat sets. I have no clue the true medical benefits of it, but in my bro-science opinion it feels like it stretches everything out and sorta extends my back in between the contraction of the squats.

I did one of those things after having ruptured/herniated discs. Will not use again. Hurt like a mf'er

do you normally fly 1st class, and explain "awkward"?

Pretty much, back AIDS are some of the worst, too.
I'm going to go ahead and say that the travel discomfort, coupled with the workout just led to a little muscular strain - maybe of the "overuse" variety, but not a traditional overuse.
I would rest and ice for a few days, back off 15 to 20 percent of the weight and go again. If the pain returns fairly quickly when doing that, seek professional medical opinions on what the injury is and how to recover.

Be honest with me, are you overextending your back while squatting?
I see this frequently - while working to maintain an arch (and usually too much of one), a trainee will overextend and look up way too much.

Sounds like bad form

It's possible. Something I struggle with is sort of going up onto my tiptoes on the way up for some reason, so I've been concentrating on keeping my heels planted. Might have caused me to overextend my back. Very possible.

Do you squat in shoes with a heel rise (like most running shoes)?
A lot of people like to squat in Chucks, but I prefer Vans. Both with no heel rise.

Sure do. Damn! Never even occurred to me that would cause it.
