They are called VR routes. We have two in the BTR airspace, one crosses I-12 near Walker and the other is up near Amite - Kentwood area. They are very low level VFR training routes. Most of the aircraft that use them in our area are BE40'S(military trainer version).
I am not implying the F16 was on a VR route.

Unless of course the Cessna was flying at the wrong altitude for the direction of flight.
Are you talking about flying VFR odd + 500 East / Even +500 West? If I remember correctly, that's only > 3500 ft ...

Cessnas are pretty forgiving. You can crash really soft in those things.

I was thinking MOA. It's open airspace, but can have heavy military activity.
I was doing my second Xcountry and had a Jet come fly on side of me to where I could see him, near Biloxi, and then he waved at me and then climbed away so fast I couldn't see where he went.
So other than TCAS they can't see civilian planes on a radar? Because I know not all planes fly with transponders on, especially if they are in mostly G and E airspace anyway.
I learned to fly at KNEW and Being in KMSY's veil we had to have a Mode C on at all times.

Correct. anything under 3500 is open and free.

Fighter jets obviously have Air to Air radar, but you actually have to turn it on and look for other jets. It's not nearly as simple as it looks in the movies.

That entire region falls within R-6002 with Gamecock MOA being active almost constantly. High density Mil traffic.
havnt been thru there in a while, I believe restrictions were from SFC-130AGL.

The woman who lives in a Baton Rouge home where a small plane crashed into the backyard Wednesday morning, has been arrested on drug charges. Police say they found five marijuana plants growing in the woman's yard, about 15 feet from where the plane went down. 53-year-old Betty McManus was arrested on charges of cultivation of marijuana, Baton Rouge police said. Before her arrest, McManus told WAFB 9NEWS, she couldn't believe the news when someone called to tell her about the crash. "I thought it was a joke," McManus said. "It was a shock."

I was on that road yesterday, there were several low passes by F-16s from Shaw AFB flying yesterday. Tragic.

Am I the only one amazed at the lack of damage to the camper in this pic? If someone was inside they are some type of lucky.

Agreed.
It must've gently rolled up against that trailer.

The trailer on the right probably has a hole in one side and out the other!
But seriously, you'd think just weight of that engine would bow in the side of that camper.

how airborne radar was not in use for the F16 pilot in this incident is mind boggling. The Cessna pilot had noting at all instrument wise like the F16 pilot has at his fingertips.
The radar in the F16 is forward looking with a scan cone of about 120 degrees, hypothetically the Cessna could have been on the same course direction as the F16, and the F16 did a tight turn into the path of the Cessna never seeing him visually or on radar. Mid airs rarely occur with the planes on a head on path, the planes are usually flying headings that end up converging on the same point due to one of the planes changing altitude or making a sudden course change.
